If I'm a total noob who hasn't done CFW on a handheld since the PSP 1000 games; any tips for doing it on my New3DSXL?

I downloaded Ironfall Invasion a while ago and am on 9.9.0-26U. I did some minor google-fu but it seems like there's tons of options and I'd prefer to not completely fuck up my system while still allowing me "normal" access to shit.

I'm not really interesting in anything other than the option for open-source stuff in the future.

I can offer a little help but there will still be some gaps.

If all you truly want is some homebrew, I don't think you'd need a CFW. Using IronHax you should be able to launch the HomeBrewLauncher and run anything you want to from there. As long as you don't update the N3DS, it will continue to work. You would just need to get the HBL files onto the SD card, then get IronHax running (not sure on the details there) and you are set. Also BrowserHax may be a good method of launching HBL as well, at least initially, and then MenuHax is a good "permanent" way to do the same. I know that's not a precise answer, but should get you googling in the right direction.

Doing more than homebrew gets significantly more complicated. Most guides are going to say to update to 10.3 before downgrading to 9.2, but now that 10.4 is out I'm unsure if getting to 10.3 is easy or not. You can try to downgrade from 9.9 but there's probably a higher risk of problems. Here's a link for SafeSysUpdater. It's not a tutorial though so it isn't going to be a step-by-step on downgrading. There are some other threads on GBATemp which could help with that. I never had to downgrade, but Rata has so maybe he'll have more info.

Once you've downgraded though, getting a CFW set up is pretty easy and just takes a bit of time. Here's the tutorial I like.

The problem is that Ironhax is dead for now in 10.4 so he neesd to stay away of 10.4 in sysnand

But if he's not on 10.4 he will have issues playing games online and eshop (even legit games) Hans doesn't always work

The other thing is since he's on 9.9, if he uses the web browser he'll get that update nag and be unable to use Browserhax to install Ironhax.

Unless he sets up the Tubehax DNS prior to ever using the web browser.

Browserhacks still works on 10.4 (don't know about 10.5 yet) so in a few days if it does you can update to 10.5 then downgrade to 9.2. it is fairly simple and hard to brick if you don't do a major fuck up (i.e. turn off during downgrade) and even if you do as long as you did not mess up your DNS you can force it to repair and update back to 10.5 and try again.

i just recently downgraded a new purchase n3ds and it was harder to get the hax to work then actually do it.

You can downgrade a 10.4? Even if browserhax work, people were reporting that memchuhax ( something like that) which is the downgrade exploit is fixed
