YES! As a speedrnner of LBW, this makes me so happy since it means I won't have to spend $900+ to record speedruns of it! Now to get a Switch down the road lol.

Really hope its a port and they don't fix major glitches (can navigate OOB and skip most dark world dungeons to get paintings).

Edit: oh its just a rumor... Well it better come true! 3DS speed runs are so notoriously expensive to do since you have to go 3rd party for a capture card

My prediction: They will make a set of AR glasses that let you see a game no one else can see projected against any flat surface while pushing virtual buttons connected to two Power Glove 2.0s that go around the wrist and connect to your thumbs and forefingers. The project codename will be "Infinite" and when it releases they'll call it the "Poo."

If it's not a cheaper-to-build hardware revision of the 3ds as they sunset the device, most I'd expect is a stripped down Switch that's smaller, joyconless, and handheld-only to get a cheaper Switch unit out, even though that'll bring about the problem of devs not supporting anything but traditional inputs in future Switch games for compatibility reasons.

Technically, in Japan they've begun releasing a cheaper Switch that comes without a Dock.

I've seen pictures floating around of a new $150 model of 2ds that has a hinge and is significantly thinner. They also seem to come in many different designs.

I think these already exist in Japan? In any case hopefully the build quality is incredible to justify the $50-70 markup over a normal new 2ds. Wouldn't be surprised if this is their successor because competing with their own Switch with an entirely new platform would be unbelievably stupid.

I think if Nintendo wants to do anything with a continued DS line it will be a clamshell type add-on with a built in half dock/battery that attaches to the Switch. The other concept I can see working is to release a Switch redesign that can be placed into portrait mode (w/ Joycons) that will display 1 or 2 screens depending on the game card inserted. This fixes their hardware exploit issue at the same time.

The only other thing I can conceive of them doing is going Gameboy Micro here and keeping the DS line alive just enough as a half supported 2DS XL like above that can also somehow run Switch carts at drastically downscaled resolution.

Whatever PR speak they want to throw out there, a full on 3DS successor will pull from Switch's business. I don't see them doing that.

Uh, new 2DS XL has been a thing for a while now. Those designs are japan only though. There's only blue-green and creamsicle orange in NA. It has the faster processor and camera nub of the new 3DS XL only it doesn't have 3D and is therefore cheaper.

They're kind of shitty to use without headphones thou, because they moved the speakers to the bottom corners, which is awkward not to block with your hands. Loud sounds also cause the thing to vibrate.

    Nintendo Direct Press Release
    • Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn: The hit Wii game Kirby’s Epic Yarn is warping to Nintendo 3DS. Every stage in the original Wii version is stitched in, but this Nintendo 3DS version has some new features, like the ability to craft bigger yarn balls, summon bead-collecting wind and play two new modes featuring familiar faces King Dedede and Meta Knight. Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn is scheduled to launch for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems in 2019.

    • Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey: One of the most acclaimed games in the Mario & Luigi RPG series is getting a remake on Nintendo 3DS. In addition to the game’s revamped graphics and refined gameplay, a new side story follows Bowser Jr. as he gathers an army, creates formations, supports his allies with an arsenal of moves and generally causes chaos (in the best way possible). Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey will prove two adventures are better than one on Jan. 11.

    • Luigi’s Mansion: Two players who each own the game can team up to explore and capture ghosts in Luigi’s Mansion, a Nintendo 3DS remake of the classic Nintendo GameCube launch game. This new version of the game also features amiibo support. Tapping one of the four compatible amiibo will reveal where Boos are hiding and heal Luigi when he talks to Toad, among other bonuses. Luigi’s Mansion will haunt the Nintendo 3DS family of systems on Oct. 12.

    • Yo-Kai Watch Blasters: Whether players throw their allegiance behind the Red Cat Corps or the White Dog Squad, Yo-Kai Watch Blasters lets players team up with friends locally or online to tackle the most action-packed battles in the series yet. A free “Moon Rabbit Crew” software update on Sept. 27 will add new missions, new areas to explore, new Yo-kai to befriend and new Big Boss Yo-kai. Yo-Kai Watch Blasters: Red Cat Corps and Yo-Kai Watch Blasters: White Dog Squad are now available for Nintendo 3DS.
