Starting at 1:10; worst radio call of all time? Especially in comparison to the best in the business right after it.

thats some pretty butthurt announcing lol, running through to catch that without the dive would have been a much lower percentage play, and if the ball goes under, thats almost a guaranteed inside the park.

    From the Fangraphs chat:

    Mike Petriello:
I have no idea if this is true or not but WHAT:

RT @LigaDomcom Brian Mejia Oscar Taveras' agent has confirmed to various Dominican reporters that the player has been declared dead.

Bumgarner made $3,750,000 this year. Most underpaid non-arbitration player in baseball?

    Ok another question...

So, Bumgarner is god, and everybody knows this.

Given that, why do the Royals put their best pitcher up against him? Wouldn't it be better for them to basically "let it go" and use Guthrie or something, so that Shields can give them a really good chance to beat Peavy or Hudson?

Ideally you want your best pitcher to start twice in a seven game series and still be available out of the pen game seven if it comes to that. If shields pitches games two and six, he's lost for seven unless you are absolutely desperate like a high scoring multiple extra innings game.

And of course after I hit enter, another thing dawned on me, if you have some rain outs, you could potentially have him start a third game. One of the things that fucked the Giants in 89 is that the earthquake caused a two week postponement so they got a double dose of the stewart/Welch buzzsaw that I don't think any team could have countered. Giants probably would have still lost that series but it probably wouldn't have been a sweep if they faced their third and fourth starters.

because doing so would basically send a message of "I have no faith in this team to beat this pitcher". The same thing could be said for any other sport:
NHL: well the other team has the best goalie in the game in nets, I might as well give my starter the night off, were probably gonna lose.
NFL: Were playing TOM FUCKING BRADY, better rest our star QB.
NBA: Better pull my top player off the court while Kobe's on.

You never want to send the message to your team that losing is inevitable and ok. Any pitcher can have an off night, just because its the world series doesnt make it exempt.

All those leagues have infinitely more parity than MLB, though. And playing Rivers against Manning isn't anything near a 100% guarantee that you won't have him for the Chiefs or whatever the next week. Also the dropoff between Rivers and Kellen Clemens is a lot more than between Shields and Ventura.

The getting an extra game makes more sense, but I dunno it still seems to me like it's basically a situation where they're saying the only chance they have to win is to shut the Giants out when Bumgarner is pitching, but that the likelihood of him getting outperformed is low enough that they'd be better off to give themselves the best chance possible in the other 5 games.

Especially given the Royals' bullpen, the NL game particularly seems like it might be worth trying to use the pitcher's batting spot more offensively. Although I do feel like Yost has been outwitted in that respect, which makes sense given that he doesn't have that to deal with all year.

Dafuq about parity? MLB always seems to have at least 1-2 new teams every year making the playoffs. NHL doesn't have nearly that much. I'll give you the NFL though as a lot can happen to curtail even the best teams seasons.

Implying Shields is their best pitcher

To actually answer your question - let's pretend Shields were their best pitcher, which he isn't -

You don't throw away games, period. You want to start game 1 with your best pitcher to maximize his use in the series, and you also want to give your team the best chance to win. There are no guarantees in baseball. It'd be nice to match up your #1 against their #4, but that doesn't guarantee the win - and if you are confident in your back-end guys, you should be able to start your good guy against their better guy, because ther'es a chance good guy has a great day or better guy has a meh day, for example.

Nothing would suck more than to actually get 3-4 runs off of Bum but have shit ass pitching in there on your side that ends up losing you the game. You don't play cute in this game, there's too much at stake and you never, ever forfeit a game.

    Since 2000:

MLB - 9 Different WS Champs
NHL - 10 Different Stanley Cup Champs
NFL - 10 Different Superbowl Champs
NBA - 6 Different NBA Champs

NBA is by far the worst, and MLB's parity is fine, really, Plow just has no fucking idea what he's talking about.

There's 200 fucking million in annual salary difference between the top and the bottom.

    NOTHING TO SEE HERE

The Royals pay 90m a year, and they're playing a team in the world series that pays 60m a year more than them.

    TOTALLY FAIR GROUND
