Garuda and Leviathan can heal themself for 7000-12000 HP.
EA+Scherzo+no Shell strat works extremely well for a melee setup in VD. 5 min fights with SAM, SAM, WHM, BRD, SMN, GEO (can replace one melee by either THF, RNG or PLD for safety and still win in <10 min) Avatars in VD remain rather dangerous even with Bar+Shell+Fend+/RUN since they have a very high regain and the double Weather while with EA+Scherzo everything does 100-200 dmg (including nukes). Only multi-hits physical BPs and melee hits can tear up so melees should use Seigan+Third Eye.
Lunge/Swipe on PLD/RUN interrupted Heavenly Strike and Diamond Dust.
Also if you are an A/O PLD, it's prudent to switch between O/A depending on TP moves. Ochain for physical/Aegis for nukes and magical bloodpacts. I tried riding Aegis for an entire Shiva VD fight and because Aegis lacks shield skill, I was basically naked for Rush and it would sometimes spike to 1700, normally did 90-200 with Ochain on.
No big shock, but these BCs on VE are . . . very easy to solo on any job that can solo. I bet I could clear N on PLD pretty comfortably solo.
Friend managed to solo D leviathan and ifrit on bst using the new slug pet.
I think the colored staggers may stun/interrupt specific types of moves. Yellow stagger didn't stun Heavenly Strike but Red did. Maybe yellow=stuns magic, blue=stuns melee, red=stuns rages, white=stuns wards. Also i dont think these are immune to gravity and because these are lolavatars, you can sidestep their physical rages. I got a "player js too far" when i stepped back like 4 yalms while Shiva was readying Rush.
Finally another oddity about these that makes them so easy is unlike other VD fights, particulary VD AA's, these fights dont have a generic DT%. AA's as you increased difficulty gained a moderate dt% boost such that breaths and atonement which bypass int/mnd/mdb were cutting huge damage cuts. This isn't the case here. It's also odd because Avatars in the 75 version had a -50% PDT like the player's summomed versions.
Also i bet a solid sch can helix kite these avatar fights since their tp moves take a good 2-3 to charge up unlike AA's weapon skills. Can probably outrun astral flow on blu too wkth subduction spam.
Moves are fast so you could've just missed the timing. I have interrupted rages with red and blue (haven't procced grellow during one yet) and interrupted magic with red blue and grellow. Literally no proc didn't interrupt a move/spell the one run I did... unless that was what the emergency maintenance was about last night lol
Also while it doesn't appear they have dt they definitely have some kind of pdt. My Excalibur endmg and shield bashes were appropriately reduced but magic still seemed to do okish
Ostro greaves do not work on Spirit/Soul Jump.

I wish SE would quit adding TP bonus for only the old jumps. Wyvern survivability is such now that they only get used during spirit surge. If you ever even use spirit surge. -.-
Maybe if SE would freaking split jump timers already(without bloddy nerfing them!) then we'd give a damn about jump/high jump only gear.

Till they give pup formless strikes, no, it's not gonna be better than mnk. Can pup be inserted into a DD role for most crap? sure but it's hard to shake the lolpup stigma and most pups gear really terribly for whatever reason. There's also the ja delay murdering your dps like with dnc unless you choose to have your puppet function with no maneuvers.
Impetus(moreover, fulltime attack/acc JA) and KA are probably always going to be better than an automaton. Also HP
I'm sure that strategy works and is quick, but if you want a strategy that's braindead easy and has pretty much a 0% chance of failure:
Group - PLD/RUN, RDM/WHM, BRD/WHM, SMN/WHM, RNG/WAR, RNG/WAR
Buffs:
DT - Protect for everyone. Scherzo, Earthen Armor, and no Shell for the last 5 players. Shell, Wind Carol II (why not?), maybe a Ballad, and Aegis for the PLD (along with typical PLD buffs). SMN can use Earthen Ward if they want.
DD - Soul Voice'd Prelude x2, Valor Minuet V, and IV if you have a 99 Daurd. PLD songs essentially don't matter, but give them March. SMN can use Crimson Howl if they want.
Debuffs: Distract II, Dia III, Pining Nocturne or Addle, whatever else you want because none of it really matters. Could have your SMN and RDM sub BLM for Impact after you get used to this fight.
Go in, buff, paladin tanks the avatar. Everyone else stays out of range. If it uses AF, that's hate reset on everyone it hits. It should do 0-350 damage to everyone with the listed buffs. PLD should save some JAs and push hate back up quickly after the AF animation finishes, RNG should back off a little until the PLD has hate again. Fight takes about 10 minutes.
Are you sure it's a reset and not just list removal? Because every time it hit me I immediately got hate back with a single action despite my healer not getting hit to the point where if I swing at the right time it wouldn't even turned.
