How have you forgotten the era of the Kraken Club?
Cecil used 1h swords as a DRK, so yeah. Considering they're going pretty hard in the paint with FF references I could see them going that route. I think Scythes were unique to XI unless someone can bring up other reference points that DRK was used in past titles that used them.
Since this seems lost in all of this, we're all aware that everything is specifically described as (Class)'s Arm, right?
There's no need for any kind of extravagant off-hand work arounds for additional branching Jobs.
Yes, you have stuff like the relics being labeled as (Class)'s Arm and only equipable by the job, but it'd be pretty weird for something that's blatantly not a lance/spear be labeled "Lancer's Arm", and keep in mind that pretty much all the class names in Japanese are as direct as "Lancer" is in English.
Then again, Uhlan was the closest thing to DRK in XII, and they used lances, so...
XII Hunter (dagger/katana) is pretty much XIV Rogue/Ninja, too. I thought they were going to use Hunter as the class and Thief & Ninja as the jobs, but oh well.
I think main problem stems from them trying to make the game more open to attract more players.
Pretty sure that was done to make sure relaunch was a success and make sure they made some money.
It worked well from a profit standpoint, but I think that is what made everything suck for anyone who isnt a casual.
Edit: Still mad the class is rogue and not thief btw.
Ogre Battle 64 Cataphract, please. Spear, tower shield, thick ass armor. A walking wall of armor that gives little and takes even less.
Also, If they really wanted to go nuts, Sam could seriously be split into 3 types: sword, spear and bow. Am I the only person who wants to see a Yumi-wielding Sam in the back ranks sniping the shit out of everyone? That's right below my desire of having a parry-tank Sam with counters off the GCD.
I'm just gonna say this. Having a job that is based around spending HP to increase damage be the tank is still pretty dumb. Cecil did use 1H swords and shield though. I don't think it will be tank, but if it is I will still play it because I love DRKs.
You're not the only one who assumed we'd get THF and NIN together, especially after the rogue class was announced. I don't remember the exact quote, but I believe their reasoning for not including THF had something to do with the lore. I could be mistaken. Either way, the lack of THF is interesting and I have a feeling they had a hard time differentiating THF and NIN. It's also possible they just didn't want to add two more DPS jobs in a single patch. With that said, I believe THF will eventually be added to the game because of its popularity. Although, I have a feeling we won't see THF until well after the expansion or even until a second expansion, with the latter being the most likely timeframe we'd receive it.
Here's where I'd like to speculate a bit. There are a few areas on the world map that still need to be implemented in the game as of patch 2.4, Ishgard and Ala Mihgo among them. We'll already be getting some, if not most of the northern region beyond Ishgard with the expansion. It was an area that had been teased to players since 1.0 and was tied into part of the lore from the beginning. This made it the logical choice for the first expansion. Following that theme it would make sense for a future expansion to focus on the east, aka Ala Mihgo. I wouldn't be surprised if the patches following 3.0 begin to build a story for a return of the Garlean threat, possibly a continuance of Yugiri's storyline. We'll probably see the Garleans participate behind the scenes in the thousand year war during 3.0+, but I find it difficult to believe they'll be the main focus. Therefore, this leads me to believe Ala Mihgo will be introduced next. Plus, if they stick to their reasoning that no city would allow a guild of thieves then I believe it could fit the Ala Mihgo storyline. A guild of thieves could be used as a representation of Ala Mihgo's rebellion against Garlean rule, with their guild located within or even on the outskirts of the city. It would also be ripe for a robinhood-esque story.
Obviously, this may never happen because we're still waiting for the first expansion to release and anything could change. However, I still believe THF never being introduced just wouldn't make sense. If SE wants to continue to milk the FF franchise for this game the addition of THF one day is a no brainer. It's only a matter of when and how.
Of course Dark Knights were tanky in the single player Final Fantasy games, you couldn't chose who would get attacked and their abilities took their own HP, so they had to have some level of mitigation otherwise it was simply too much risk. That doesn't mean they were tanks in the sense that they were meant to be the ones sponging incoming damage.
I honestly don't know how many FF Jobs out there can be paired like they did with SMN & SCH - and I mean having both using the SAME weapon type.
Ok, maybe magic users can still be developed around "generic" scepters and staves, but what about melee?
GLA > Sword & Shield DRK, basically Cecil from FFIV? FFXI Red Mage?
LNC > Lance (Naginata) SAM? People would ragequit.
PUG > Puppetmaster?
MRD > 2H Axe Beastmaster? 2H Axe Templar sounds unlikely.
ARC > Ranger, Hunter?
ROG > FFXI Dancer?
It could be that 3.0 will revamp Classes / Jobs so that Jobs come from Classes' flavor / core mechanics, but are not required to use the exact same weapon.
Having a pet is Arcanist's core trait, and it's indeed part of what SMN and SCH are.
It's certainly possible that is what happened. I do believe the lack of THF could have just been a result of an inability to differentiate THF from NIN and vice versa. So, yeah, definitely possible they combined the two to solve the issue and just went with turning THF into the class and giving it JSE. Do I think they could still add a proper "THF" job one day? Sure, especially if they think it's worth the effort in an attempt to attract/retain more subs.
in FFXI, DRK is able to tank with apocalypse and also with sword/shield in lvl75 cap.....
we did before 2004 fafnir with ridill + shield on fafnir cos PLD fell asleep
WORKED LIKE A BOSS!
