I'm working on an interview translation from Game Watch, but I thought this was kind of interesting so I just wanted to snip it and post it here prior to finishing up the whole thing. This is a quote from Yoshida while the interviewer and him were talking about white mage DPS.

"...For development, such as with Bahamut's Coils, the development team assumes what the item level should be for general equipment on players when they clear a raid. They sum up the basic DPS for four DPS and tanks at that assumed item level and cut that by about 10-15% for the minimum clear DPS. Healer DPS is not taken into account when this is set.

"Certainly for people who are at world's first level, their goal is to clear it at as low an item level as possible, lower than the one assumed during development. So if you look at the fight and figure out that if it's not numerically possible to clear with four DPS and tanks, you'll need to make up the gap with DPS from healers. Then when those groups publish clear videos and other people see the healers DPSing, they might think that healers need to be DPSing even though its a situation that only arose because their clear would have otherwise been impossible. While we could take this into account, and assume a different item level in the next update which would then make it impossible to clear even with the healer DPS, we'd eliminate this type of play for highly skilled players who use communication, items, and a high level of understanding to come up with those last second clears. That would be a tough decision to make, so I still think it should be up to each party's own plans.

"This is also one of the reasons we decided to implement both a normal and savage version of Alexander. Once again, healer DPS was not included in the development team's calculation as it was for other jobs, so you should just think of healer DPS as a last way to get your overall party's DPS up to where it needs to be."

    tl;dr:
    > healer DPS doesn't factor into their calculation for DPS requirements in battles
    > the DPS requirement is set to 10-15% lower than the sum of what four DPS and two tanks would put out at the assumed required item level for a fight

Just don't show this to all the anti-healer DPS crowd or they will go nuts.

Why do we always say "healer DPS" when we mean "SCH DPS".

The nice thing about Aero is the animation does the "whoosh" effect for you.

I'm curious what the normal 'tank dps' is in their calculations.

Likely 330. Kind of makes sense they didn't calculate healer dps which is why a ScH dpsing tends to be a massive push in content.

Now that they calculate it, all it means is pugs are going to have a harder time on easy content, since you know...it tends to come to:

    SCH: "SCH doesn't dps..btw what's a fairy?"
SCH: "I dps only, whm is a healer, not SCH. btw what's a fairy?"
SCH: "Ruin ruin ruin ruin ruin."
    SCH: "succor succor succor afk."

From what I gathered, it's more likely that healer DPS will be a factor in savage difficulty instead. Not exactly PUG-friendly anyway.

It's already hard enough to get the healer to DPS in dungeons. No way they will tune the difficulty of sub-savage content to include it.

Let's be real though, good healers can handle a bit of DPS on the side but I wouldn't want to force anyone who was...subpar to have to DPS in order to beat content. I mean you ideally play healer to heal, if you can DPS on the side good for you but it shouldn't be expected to DPS.

    That's just insane.

I doubt it. It may still be a factor for clearing below the minimum iLvl in Savage, but that's not something factored by the development team for clearing content at the minimum iLvl as noted above. I believe the point of the article snippet was more that Normal mode was tuned so that those early clears won't require healer DPS at all.

How would they handle job spreads in parties then. 2 PLD would do less combined DPS than a 2 WAR or 1 WAR 1 PLD composition.

I think people are forgetting this bit:

They sum up the basic DPS for four DPS and tanks at that assumed item level and cut that by about 10-15% for the minimum clear DPS.
Without any idea of what the "assumed item level" is we can't really infer much about where their numbers are coming from.

Given that they probably use tanks in full VIT accessories and healers aren't DPSing it's probably higher than we'd think.

Yeah they kind of have to use full VIT etc, because 95% of the player base doesn't know any better. I'm glad they are opening up their thought process for the top tier raid. The week one clears are probably going to be impossible.

Anytime we say something is impossible, it usually gets done at some point, so I won't go that far, but I see where' you're going with that. I'm more interested to see the newest forms of PoS hacking into the ceiling to DPS twintania freely, and the subsequent bannings. I love watching over-pressured nerds cheat to maintain their "status", then getting caught out on it.

I'd say it's more because the game is actively telling tanks to use VIT gear. It's not the players' fault that the game keeps handing you fending accessories with only VIT on them.

Nothing is impossible when you devote your entire life to it. In this case, spending 20 hours raiding a day would probably get it done and someone out there is capable of doing it. Reminds me of those recruitment messages that basically imply that if you don't put your life on hold to raid 24/7 you can't join.

People go to a lot of effort to brag about shit that isn't important.
