I feel it has to do with the way it was implemented and designed. Flying mounts made the world smaller because you see it from a further distance and it can be influenced by the speed of the mount. And unless it's a place that can only be accessed by flying, you don't have to fly at all. I agree it killed world PvP a little in WoW, but you won't have a problem with that in XIV.

Plus, Yoshida already confirmed they're going to make the world more dangerous in 3.0 areas.

    Edit: Yoshida quote.
    Spoiler: show
    http://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/commen...naoki_yoshida/

Reddit: Now we'll leave dungeons and go out into the open world of Eorzea. In Final Fantasy XI and 1.0 the world wasn't exactly a safe place to travel by yourself. There was a lot of high level monsters that posed a risk to you. We don't see that in A Realm Reborn. It's very, very safe to go anywhere in the world by yourself. Is there any plans in the expansion to bring back danger into the world?

Yoshida: When we first were doing the design for ARR we wanted to bring in people who had not played MMOs before. So for someone that knows the thrill of running and getting something on you and having to walk and run around and try and get away from them or knowing that you could be killed at any second; that's great for them. But for someone that had never played an MMO before that can be a lot of stress. A lot of those people that first entering ARR think, "I bought an RPG why do I have to do this? I didn't buy a stealth game.". And so we didn't want to have that kind of stress on the new players. You're the Warrior of Light you should be able to feel like you're the Warrior of Light and not be killed by a squirrel. However, in 3.0 people are level 50. The level cap is going up to level 60. People are experienced. We want to bring back a little bit of that dangerous feel in the expansion. I mean you're going to be going into areas controlled by the Dragons. So now there's chances that you might get on your Chocobo and auto run, look around, go to get yourself a... "Oh I'm dead". We want to bring back some of that thrill and we're adding that to our concept for 3.0. But we're not going to make it anything as thrilling as the original Final Fantasy XI. We know that there's people out there who love that though.

Over time it grew up until it became the standard pretty much everywhere.
I think I didn't become aware of the cons flying brought with it until patch 5.0. That's several years after flying was introduced.

Basically it ruins everything concerning open world activities (Questing, Levelling, Gathering etc), it heavily impacted world PVP (ok, this is not an issue with FFXIV) and had heavy negative consequences on world exploration, shaping and planning.
It made everything very difficult from a developer point of view, everything would be trivialized by the flying mount.
I swear I see the thing with very different eyes now, back then I couldn't see the concerns a very few people would expose about it.
Now I can clearly see how they were absolutely right.

Flying, with heavy limitations (only in certain parts of certain zones, only with certain requisites, for small amounts of times etc) can be fine, but "free" flying everywhere (in the new zones, for FFXIV) would likely be the same situation it has been in WoW =/

XIV's maps weren't designed with flight in mind, there would either be invisible walls everywhere or you would only fly a very limited height above the ground.

Gonna assume the new zones will just be made with flying mounts in mind, and even so I don't really expect much freedom in terms of 3 dimensional movement (ie. flying mounts fly at X altitude where everything needed to be reached by flight can be accessed).

Na, they'll probably just put a heavy effect on you and be non-threateningly irritating.

If I can experience, even for a single zone, the thrill I had of flying around through the Storm Peaks in WotLK, then fuck whoever doesn't want flying mounts. That shit was so epic.

    Fair enough.

I'm optimistic about it though. I love the art direction of the game and we're getting FF6 influenced floating continents? I'm excited.

Who doesn't want to fly through an FF world on a flying chocobo? Because I sure fucking do.

I swear to God, Skai, if they re-enact the opening from FFIV with The Red Wings blaring in the background, I'm gonna lose my shit.

So much potential with flying mounts, and now we'll have both Dark Knights and Dragoons in the game. Cecil and Kain NPCs are gonna be somewhere. Maximum hype.

Best thing I remember about flying in Cata was trying to sneak into Stormwind as Horde druid by flying high overhead and shapeshifting right at the last second (for the fishing achievement of course).

One man airships are something I've wanted since 2001 before XI came out in Japan. Of course this was before I had even much understanding of hardware limitations.

They made it clear that flying mounts are in the new zones only. Also that there would be special places to take off and that the zones are designed for total freedom once in flight

I loved using Rain of Wisdom in FFT. Hell, SAM in FFT was prob my favourite iteration since it was so 'different'

Funny how they design a game to be enjoyed by the retarded, handicapped, colorblind and special needs community, and people who don't even have those kinds of disabilities can't even clear the content. Says a lot about them! But they seem to be more upset about male characters not being able to wear a wedding dress but females can wear a tux. I guess with that I'm wrong, there is clearly a few chromosomes missing with that side of the community.
