Because it is clearly an attempt to deter these people from seeking shelter in the first place and thus endangering their lives.

Why would you make the decision to pointedly announce this publicly otherwise?

Sex offender is an extremely broad classification, and many of these people have been rehabilitated.
Police funding would be better spent on relief than on incarceration (for what I would imagine probably includes a large number of low-level offenders, all the way down to unpaid parking tickets) during a particularly violent weather event.
The logistics of transporting criminals seem nightmarish.
From a human perspective, focusing on cracking down during a time of crisis instead of helping people out, regardless of their criminal status, does not sit well with my moral code.
Not everyone has an ID. Illegal immigrants are just as deserving of shelter as anyone else, for example.
And don't get me started on the American justice system in the first place (hello, low-level marijuana offenders).


This is not "let's keep child molesters away from our children and get hardened criminals off the street." It's not even close to that.

Worst part is the mom of the girl in question was just freaked out because her daughter was a lesbian and she didn't want to deal with it (yay alabama). Now the mom is truly sorry and has even gone to the courts over having her name removed from the list, but once she told the police about their relationship she basically lost all rights to have them not pursue "justice"
