so the 6 hour thing was basically bullshit is what i'm hearing lol
Not really, the bridge was moved into place in 6 hours which is an accomplishment. But when we hear it like that we assume it was finished in 6 hours, which it was not.
Pretty much. It was just so they could move the span a block away to its final location.
If you look at this video, you will see what the bridge was supposed to look like finished.
It was still missing the main cable supports to help hold up the bridge. People are starting to say that they should have put temporary posts up to alleviate the weight of the bridge until the supports were in place and the bridge was fully connected to the piles. They were cutting corners in order to prevent extended shutdowns of the road.

Statement from the bridge contractor;Costing $14.2m (£12.5m), the cable-supported footbridge was funded by the US Department of Transportation.
According to a brochure on the university website, it was designed to withstand a Category Five hurricane and last 100 years.
It was also the first bridge in the world to be constructed entirely of self-cleaning concrete, it said.

Does the self cleaning concrete clean itself of the blood?
spicy
What went wrong is the span should’ve been supported by jacks or makeshift piles until the cables were in place to hold the full weight. You can see it in the surveillance video that it just broke off from one side then just collapsed.
Video link possible NSFL cause cars get crushed...

Posted this on another discord with some locals but:
A “politician” from Sweetwater called in the radio station i listen to this morning (the little town next to FIU that connected with the bridge) stated that Sweetwater did not want this, it was a joint project from FIU and the City of Miami. But he said that they really were stress testing (IN THE MIDDLE OF RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC), and they were testing some sort of cable tension, and the cable snapped and the tensioner fell on the bridge which caused the collapse. They suspect that they made the cable tension too tight and it snapped, the employees who were doing the test all sustained quite significant injuries too, and one had a heart attack. If i were one of those employees, i would’ve spoken up against the stress test during fucking traffic. Miami rush hour is usually from 2pm-8pm.
... "And the lowest bid gets the contract!"
The lowest bid in this case didn't get the contract. The owners of the construction company in this instance donated a lot of campaign funds to local politicians so that probably had a hand in them winning the bid.
womp woooomp
this project was undoubtedly poorly implemented if not also poorly conceived and designed. this quick-build approach is especially appealing to planners when we're overly concerned about road closures and disrupting traffic on such a busy thoroughfare
I too would like to think a dozen weeks of congestion is preferable to a dozen dead bodies.
Some people really hate traffic though.
in hindsight a wooden bridge that got worked on overnight probably better option
14.2 milly taxpayer dollars for a 900 ton pedestrian bridge shit doesn't make any sense to me
didn't realize dept of trans funded it
That price tag is cray, but they also sold it as a bridge that would last a century through any hurricane we would face. If it worked as intended no one would have bitched, but alas here we are.
