suffice to say we probably shouldn't build too many high rise concrete buildings in areas with unreachable bedrock

Then, they could've condemned the building, thus paving a way to move people out and demo it and rebuild with a better foundation?
This is the way. Government really needs to step in for these cases as a public safety issue when there is clear evidence of imminent hazardous conditions reported from 3rd party technical experts. Or they need to make buildings undergo periodic inspections to catch these issues.
Did anyone confirm the association firm that runs those condos?
Rained like hell today, and now i’m hearing a fire broke out in the remaining building. This doesn’t surprise me if the electricity was still live in the building.
It wasn't really hyperbolic. They'd known about this since the 90's and sat on that info, and it generally takes deaths (In some places, its any deaths. In others, its specific deaths) to enact sweeping change above the individual actions/rights of those directly responsible, which in this case, seems like the landowners, but I suppose we'll find out more soon. In some places, its any deaths. In others, its specific deaths.
The entire point is that the eyes of the feds are on the issue now. Sad that it took THIS many goddamn deaths, but this issue isn't going away anytime soon, especially in that area, what with rising sea levels and a push to build upwards instead out outward (something I'm personally supportive of, although looking at this...)
Miami itself is sinking into the ocean and should be moved out of.
The condo was built over 40 years ago on reclaimed wetlands. Scary to think how many thousands of buildings in Florida are the same.

Now the wetlands are doing their own reclaiming.

Give it all to Disney. They seemed to have it figured out.

The town of Surfside posted a dozen documents to its website late Friday night relating to the collapsed Champlain Towers South building.
They've known since October 2018 that the garage had major structural damage from a failure in waterproofing.
"Concrete repairs should be done in a timely fashion." What a shitty report overall. This gives anyone with any potential for blame a lot of leeway "well, what is a timely fashion, 1 year, 5 years?"
Rescue efforts have halted because a fire broke out in the lower levels, so, no one who might have been alive (which was a doubtful scenario in the first place) likely is anymore.
Fucking hell, talk about just getting pissed on
Also FEMA mobilized to be on site immediately and DeSantis said no and made them wait.
