I can't speak to structural integrity of these coastline/intercoastal buildings, but I can speak to how little and infrequent work is put into them. I test building materials and air for asbestos and mold, and often time projects that come from the coastal areas contain abnormally high amounts of asbestos, almost always because the joint compounds, floor tiles, mastic, just about everything is all original from the 70s and 80s when laws against asbestos were much more lax. Very little work is ever done to condos/homes unless absolutely necessary for function, and this is for high traffic areas that people always see. I have to figure that unseen areas, like basement level pipes and pumps, are taken care of even less and allowed to become even more dilapidated as long as the water is still mostly flowing and no one is actively calling it out or complaining. Water damage is often overlooked as long there is no visible moisture damage, leaving behind areas where mold grows in abundance. No one will do anything about it because the average person never thinks to get an air quality test for the nonstop headaches they only get when in the room with the windows closed.

Cutting costs to get the bid price down is the name of the game, and as long as the building is literally not falling down it's pretty easy to get away with it.

Nothing built in the 70s from concrete was good. Absolutely nothing, and this comes from engineered experience working with these 50yr old buildings that have needed constant attention for the last 20 years. This was mostly an issue in areas with cold* climates and high salt air concentrations.

That an 82yr old building is being evacuated says a lot about a) the integrity of the building to last this long and b) the neglect of the property managers/owners.

More than a goddamn month of Juvie. I'm not saying Juvie isn't the answer, but a MONTH of punishment for a crime a serious as planning a mass shooting in a school, when they had both weapons and research on executing the shooting?

This. I don't know why anyone would think less than a month of Juvie is acceptable. A kid shoved another kid through a glass window at my middle school in 7th grade. We never saw the offender again. I still remember seeing all the fucking blood and glass shards all over the floor, and that was FAR less than two kids WITH guns at the house planning a school shooting.

You talk about not wanting to ruin someone's future? What if these kids killed? What if they ruined the future of kids not stupid enough to plan a school shooting?
