Getting kind of reflexively punitive and dumb in here. Equally good is the goal. Equally terrible is schadenfreude.

If they had trouble fitting in before, I don't think getting convicted of plotting to murder their classmates is going to improve their situation. If you are just interested in making sure they suffer for some reason, sending them back to school might be more miserable than prison for them.

If you want them to become benign members of society, therapy and maybe a new home life or high school might be a way to reset.

This. I don't know why anyone would think less than a month of Juvie is acceptable. A kid shoved another kid through a glass window at my middle school in 7th grade. We never saw the offender again. I still remember seeing all the fucking blood and glass shards all over the floor, and that was FAR less than two kids WITH guns at the house planning a school shooting.

You talk about not wanting to ruin someone's future? What if these kids killed? What if they ruined the future of kids not stupid enough to plan a school shooting?

Idk man, this guy seems to want harsher punishments for the kids even though said harsher punishments shouldn't be given to the black kids either when they fuck up.

I'm of the opinion that the punishment fits the crime that didn't end up happening, and we're fortunate to have caught them early so that we can hopefully correct the behavior.

Attempted murder or say plotting a hit on your spouse or other "attempted xxxxx" doesn't just get you a slap on the wrist either even though a horrible crime wasn't committed. The punishment can't be lenient enough that the kids will know they got a slap on the wrist because they might be embolden to try again and 21 days in juvie is just that. They at the very least need probation and supervision of some sort until they are adults and they clearly can't be returned to school either. Whatever was happening in the school to make them want to kill their classmates will still be there unless they are just sociopaths that wanted to get famous.

That said, that article mentioned that the cops searched their homes over 80 times. I dunno how procedure goes, and maybe that's a stupid exaggeration, but what are you hoping to find after the first few times?
