That is pretty par for the course with how the justice system works in the US. There is a huge disparity between the severity of punishment and the variety of crimes out there. Also I think this whole discussion seems to be erring on the side of their punishment wasn't harsh enough. What if others are being punished too harshly instead? Lets trend in the other direction rather than making punishments more severe. You know rehabilitation and all that.

Not really true. In Japan, kids know that they won't be left any criminal record if they are underage. So they just did as much shit as possible before the official adult age. They do know what is the consequence if they commit those crime as adult

Knowing the consequence and being able to understand and rationalize well enough to make a good choice are vastly different concepts a teenager won't grasp so I really don't care where they're from.

Nah, let em off the hook. They're just kids! They don't know what they're doing. They have no agency whateosever over their actions! They can't actually conceptualize what they were thinking. Nah. No sense of cause and effect or action and consequence.

Black kid the same age does something far less harmless and we've got the news media calling them "a grown man" and a "thug", with adults pulling the "I feared for my life" schtick. Cops knees are shaking from behind their police cruiser. Can't wear a hood while walking down a street without being harassed or followed and killed by a "citizen's arrest". But its revenge to point that out, so yeah, let the kids off the hook here.

Cute lil' white kids. They wouldn't hurt a fly! Just a lil' juvie and maybe we'll have em clean blackboards or something over the summer. Write a paragraph about how what they did was wrong.

I'm inclined to share Lucavi's perspective with this similar to covidiots. It's easy to wax that the system should be better, but it's not like the double standards aren't real. I can't even say this is just the cop/prison system at play, either, but also reflective of faults in the education system and a likely negligence of (cyber)bullying that led up to it. Still, no matter how sad or angry the kids may have felt, we live in an era where they had to have gone through at least one shooter drill, heard about at least one shooting in a country where it took a literal fucking pandemic just to make them stop, and otherwise walked away with the knowledge that such things aren't good or right or really even revenge against their wouldbe oppressors. Them getting off easy isn't going to deter any other plan/attempt, and may even encourage it knowing people will willfully jump to the aid of "misguided" teens. Sorry, but you don't just accidentally make wooden shanks to slip past metal detectors on accident. That's just next level beyond grabbing a gun your parents left unattended or something.

You like an idea that will never exist. "Liking an idea" hasn't improved things for said black kids. You gonna spend the rest of your life "liking an idea" that won't come true? For as many dreamers like you that exist that "like an idea" of justice being equal, you've got an equal or superior amount of people literally in the positions to change things that absolutely do not "like" your idea, and do not want things changed.

Face reality. Wanting these kids to get more than 21 fucking days in Juvie for planning to kill their classmates does not equate me wanting the justice system to be worse: its wanting the justice system to be just. Just = equal. You aren't going to raise how the justice system treats black kids compared to whites. You literally are not.

Literally ask yourself if these kids would have received this treatment if they looked like two Nigerian boys. Be honest with yourself. You already know the answer, and you know that there won't be a magical day where your dream reality exists. We can't even get the country to agree on a fucking vaccine that is proven to work. This "I believe in an idea" bullshit is farcical.

But he's not wrong in this case. It wasn't that long ago that Florida had a major school shooting so treating it as "dumb kids" is asinine. As has been said, 21 days in juvie is only the start so their punishment hasn't really been decided yet.

anyways through all the anger you continuously sound like youd rather the evil white kids get punished as harshly as some black kids do, vs wanting lighter sentences for blacks. that's why it comes across as revenge.
