1: A handful of anarcho-libertarians think centralized money doesn't leave them free enough to cheat and scam people.
2: Globalism has created an absolute fuck ton of money in the world and there's a whole lot of money laundering and bubbles for it to slosh through.
3: Said anarcho-libertarian billionaires have turned social media into their own personal propoganda machines commensurate to their wealth and they're the house holding the cards when the rug is pulled out.
4: People want to do drugs and laws aren't going to stop them, crypto makes it a bit easier.

The currency farmers in MMORPGs absolutely feel like precursors. All those crypto/NFT promoting bots on social media that reply instantly in almost EVERY single post? Those are just the groups of 20 tarutaru fishers you used to see being followed by one player to make money. The new schemes that keep being cooked up until it's too obvious and blatant that it requires a patch, then the next easiest method bubbles up, etc.
