Ok, so there's 2 types of review issues at hand. I was mostly talking about the Bayonetta 2-type issue that a lot of people were complaining about. If you're talking more about Gone Home, where someone was friends with a music composer or osmething or whatever, then my point is basically that if you can't read a review of that "game" and figure out whether or not itd be for you then you probably arent a smart consumer anyway.

I've honestly seen more of "can't review this game because I have connections" in gmaes journalism than I have seen any evidence of actual corruption.

Off the top of my head, game journos deciding to not run any stories on a hacking of 40,000 EA accounts because EA was bribing them, Jeff Gerstmann being fired over negatively reviewing Kane & Lynch, the inexcusable amount of hype training for Aliens Colonial Marines and Watch Dogs, the Eurogamer journalist who lost his job for writing an article about corruption in the gaming industry, Alex Lifschitz (producer for games like New Vegas) openly admitting that he bribes journalists, etc.

Evidence of actual corruption in the reviews process, which is what you were talking about to begin with. I'm well familiar with the rest of those stories, and I'm glad that you are too, because unfortunaely a lot of people associating themselves with the GG movement are not.

I do suspect that some reviews are paid off essentially, and that is an issue, but the conversation began about being upset iwht morality infringing upon reviews, which is a whooole other thing.

This site seems to think it's entirely possible to separate one's subjective biases from a review of a game, and their scores and reviews are pretty respectable. It's actually pretty fucking hilarious, if 20 years ago you said that some day one of the fairest games reviewers would be Christians you'd have been thrown in a padded cell. In a more mainstream sense, Totalbiscuit's reviews of games he hates from the outset (i.e. platformers, roguelites) A) Include a disclaimer that he hates this kind of game, and B) Are still actually pretty objective and informative despite this.

It's not impossible to be objective in a game review, it's just more work and less satisfying than foisting your personal biases on an unsuspecting consumer. Or as this prominent anti-GGer would put it,

That's not how professional codes of ethics work, sorry. Any violation is a transgression against the profession and needs to be dealt with. If your doctor orders a surgery you don't need, his licensing board doesn't tell you to see someone else if you don't like his work. If we were talking about somebody like Reuters or the AP being paid off to cover stories with a certain bias, would you still be saying "just read somebody else"? If so then maybe you have a condescending opinion about gaming that sorta disqualifies you from this subject.

Nobody is talking about somebody being paid to cover stories with bias. We are talking about somebody's own personal bias. There is no ethical violation for having a bias of your own when reviewing a film, a game, a book or a TV show. Reviewers and critics are allowed to have personal taste. Nobody goes on a crusade of ethics because Armond White gives every popular movie a bad grade. They just ignore him.
