Well yeah, what else do they do all day? It's certainly not journalism anymore. Most articles from these people that you read could have been written by looking at screenshots and playing 10 minutes of the intro to the game.

So, my cousin is here for the weekend with another friend for some general nerdery (board games, drinks, etc). I'm curious what his stance is on the whole GG issue so I broach the subject. I forget exactly how, but I did make a comment about Anita being a con artist, which probably got his back up, but I follow up with saying that she took a bunch of money and didn't deliver on her end of the bargain. He claims that he just said that he watched a video a while back from that series so I'm obviously wrong, to which I inquire about what video and he indicates it's the one that she's going on about the 2D game with the female lead. I just let him know that that video is not a part of the Tropes series and he was like, "oh, maybe, but she hasn't said that she wouldn't finish the others".

That was all in the car returning from a snack/drink run. We get back to the house and I ask a few follow up questions. I ask him about the 8 Gamers are dead articles, which he only read 1, and didn't even know about the rest, and about the updated ethics policies on other websites that didn't have them. He asked which ones, and the only two I could think of were Polygon and Kotaku, to which he said he doesn't read because they're terrible sites anyways. He made a comment about how he know's exactly what gamergate is about and throws out the whole "misogynst neckbeard" comment, which I find a little ironic. I ask him where he's read all this and the only site he mentioned NOT reading from (because he didn't mention sites he had read from at all) was 8chan and saying that the reason it's terrible is that "It has child-porn threads". So I tried to explain just because one group on there has such a thread, doesn't mean that the entire site is filled with pedofiles, but I don't think it came out right. I defended the 8chain creator (I forget his name) by saying he doesn't believe in censorship and that's why he doesn't remove those boards and he doesn't necessarily support the content. He just sticks to his guns saying it's child-pornography. I think we just let the conversation end there, or let it take a new course.

I don't want to ruin the weekend, but I am curious on a few things. I know I'm definately not Anti-GG, but I'm not sure if I'd classify myself as a member of GG. I'm comfortable saying I'm Pro-GG. If I get the chance, I'm going to aska few follow up questions about if he's still following GG news, which I assume he's not, and see what his reasoning is for the hardline on the "it's about misogyny towards women" stance.
That would all make sense if he's not seen any coverage since christmas and is still firmly believing the narrative provided by the games journalists.

I'm just trying to figure out how to impress on him that Anita, Brianna, and Zoey are NOT what Gamergate was about for the people that are supporting of the cause. I may see what his opinionis on Leah Alexander. Personally, she seems like a pretty terrible person. Same with Zoey and Brianna. Should they have gotten harrassed? Any GG would agree and say no, that's not right, so I don't know how that makes the movement about doing just that.

Please let me know if I've somehow mis-interpreted the whole mess from what I wrote out.

I do want to try to hit on a few "hypotheticals" like:
"If" GG WAS about ethics in the videogames press, wouldn't it make sense that the journalists would spin things to make the supporters of this cause look like assholes or distract the issue by parading other issues out to the public.
I mean, if it was only about misogyny in videogames, there wouldn't be such a diverse group of people supporting it. I'll have to reference the meet-ups and the diverse group that appears to show up to them.

Anyways, that's my rant, sorry for turning this into a bit of a livejournal.

As I mentioned before, exposure to true information does not matter anymore. A person who is demoralized is unable to assess true information. The facts tell nothing to him. Even if I showered him with information, with authentic proof, with documents, with pictures — even if I take him by force to the Soviet Union and show him a concentration camp — he will refuse to believe it until he is going to receive a kick in his fat bottom. When a military boot crashes his butt, then he will understand, but not before that. That’s the tragedy of the situation of demoralization.

Chari is right and this really goes with any topic, period. Once a person has developed their opinion and they obviously have no interest in changing it or listening to other views, it's time to let it go. This is where the old saying "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still" is true. I have a friend that is extremely stubborn with a lot of views. To be specific, we got into a heated argument about pc versus console because he is oblivious to anything pc related and also has no understanding about the new consoles. The conversation was brought up because he found out the new Batman will not be on the 360. To put it into better perspective, he refuses to have internet in his apartment because his phone is "good enough" even though he's always complaining about his carrier and he also has never once had actual internet, only his phone.

Long story short, I asked him, "you would rather spend 3x on this one game, spend more on the new console, and have less performance, is that correct?" His response was that I am an idiot because he doesn't "need" a pc (he has never owned a pc) and I'm pushing my views. I ended the conversation by telling him point blank it's not about my views, it's about logic and that he was being ignorant and putting his head in the sand because he didn't understand what he was talking about and since he didn't know about it, it must be bad. After a few days he actually came around and we talked logic. The only reason I went that far was because I've known him for long enough and I know he can handle being talked to in such a manner.

My example is no where near as extreme as something like GG and it still went south in a hurry. When it comes to such a topic, it is my opinion to just keep it to yourself, especially when dealing with the type of person that is not looking to have a constructive conversation about the subject.

Hey man I feel ya! I love having constructive conversations about almost any subject matter and it's awesome when someone can educated you on a subject that you didn't know anything about or you thought you knew something but not the entire scope. It is a shame when people act in such a way where you can't even talk about something. It seems especially with politics, religion, and extremely passionate subjects such as GG when a person has taken a stance there is no going back.

A couple other funnies (in my opinion) that follow the topic of people not opening their minds or just being flat out ignorant.

1) I was selling a pc with a Pentium G3258 unlocked to 4.5GHz. Guy messages me saying it won't run any video game period. After some back and forth he states it's only a single core processor. I link the product page directly from Intel and ask how is it only a single core again? He replies by saying it's probably a virtual core and it's a garbage processor.

2) After Obama was re-elected, a former friend posted on his facebook, and this is the exact way he put it, "DO YOU PEOPLE REALIZE WHAT YOU HAVE DONE TO OUR COUNTRY".

People dislike complexity and nuance because it requires them to exert effort in their analysis of an issue. It's so much easier to just go with the flow and agree that a bunch of angry men on the internet hate women than to actually take the time to sift through what nonsense ayy team is up to, where GNAA is shitposting and when it's baphomet doxxing people as opposed to lone individuals and really drill down to find that there's actually no coordinated effort to harass women in GamerGate. God help you if you try to introduce the monkey wrench that is GG getting sick of that accusation to the point where they organized groups to hunt down and report any harassment.
