It's a good thing, no doubt. I just have some mixed feelings about the whole thing.

I get the father's response to the whole thing as being a reasonable alternative to the issue, however, I take the issue with endorsements from Frank Serpico (who used to be a prominent figure on the forefront of police corruption) and the "police unions" who endorsed the bill. Frank and people who have the mentality of his so called "transparent" police world grew up in a time when police corruption was the front of every newspaper in the nation. It's old school to a T, but comparing past policing to modern and current day policing is not exactly a good distinction. The missions and the mindset are totally different. And, Frank has become more of a political figure than an advocate for transparency. He's letting his endorsement build his political agenda, rather than doing what modern day policing really wants is collaboration.

That's what the issue is really about. Outside sources be damned; if you don't have two entities working together to fix issues, nothing is solved. What these people are proposing are just plain old fashioned "cleaning house", which doesn't differentiate between the good and the bad. If they identify systematic failures of a police force, they disband it instead of fixing it. In the end, it's easier to do than individualizing each review of performance and policy/procedure, however, that in itself means nothing when you A) Don't have enough personnel to fill the positions that are suddenly vacant, mostly because something of 75% of the population does not qualify to be a police officer, and B) There's a strong lack of want in candidates to fill the positions when you already have more than qualified personnel on board who can be recycled to meet the objective.

That's what my gripe is. I don't care about an outside review board; let them come, but let them work with the agency, not review it without any type of oversight or understanding of the situation.

lol, I really didn't think there needed to be a distinction, but fair enough.

    http://www.wjhl.com/story/27481410/s...-to-age-of-son

JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) - The Johnson City Salvation Army is reviewing its emergency shelter policy after the organization turned away a homeless family with a teenage son on a cold night earlier this month, all because of the boy's age.

Tim Lejeune says on one of the coldest nights of the year, despite the organization's white flag waving outside the shelter, the Salvation Army turned his family away, because his son is 15 years old.

"They said he's too old to stay on the women's side, because of the women running around in their pajamas and they said he's too young to stay on the men's side in case some pervert wants to do whatever," Lejeune said.

Lejeune says his wife, their 15 year-old son, 16 year-old daughter and five year-old son, all down on their luck, have been living in their car for the last several weeks.

Lejeune says it was so cold one night earlier this month he took his family to the Salvation Army. Noticing the organization's white flag blowing in the cold air, generally a symbol that all are welcome due to hazardous weather conditions, he says he expected the organization to welcome them with open arms. Instead, he says the shelter told them there was no way they could stay there with a 15 year-old boy.

"He said, 'I'm sorry, you're son, y'all can't stay here, because of his age,'" Lejeune said. "I said, 'Are you kidding me?'"

"It was just heartbreaking," 15 year-old Dustin Lejeune said late last week.

Prepared to return to their cars to sleep in 18 degree weather, Johnson City police officers came upon the family and took up their cause. However, that proved unsuccessful.

Certain the family should not be expected to sleep in their car on one of the coldest nights of the year, the officers brought the family to the Johnson Inn and then did something remarkable. They pooled their resources and were prepared to pay for a motel room for the family with money out of their own pockets.

"They collected money to put the family up and when they were at the Johnson Inn, the clerk that was working there that night realized what was going on, so they themselves comped the room for the family," Maj. Garry Younger said. "In return, the officers took the money they collected and went and bought groceries that they gave to the family. I'm very proud that we employ people with that fortitude that care about the citizens."

Police officer buys eggs for woman caught shoplifting to feed her family in Tarrant

TARRANT, Alabama -- A woman caught shoplifting eggs in Tarrant Saturday didn't leave with handcuffs and a court date. Thanks to a Tarrant police officer, she left with food for her family.
Officer William Stacy was called to the Dollar General on Pinson Valley Parkway when employees caught the woman trying to steal a dozen eggs, Tarrant Police Chief Dennis Reno said.

The woman had her young children in the car. She told Officer Stacy that she was only stealing because she was trying to feed her children.

Stacy talked with Dollar General, and they said they wouldn't prosecute. So Stacy made an offer.

"He said, 'If I give you these eggs, will you promise that you won't shoplift anymore?'" Reno said. "He knew that she was telling the truth and that's the reason he went in and bought the eggs."

Where were these charitable cop giveaways on the News last year, or the year before? Was going to mention Trayvon Martin, but Zimmerman wasn't a cop.

Quite possibly sensationalized PR stunts 10/10 Its Okay - IGN.

I usually see them pop up every year, but not by any mainstream media. Mostly random small time blogs, local news or police related sites only.

Some of these holiday giveaways have been going on for decades.

We have an Adopt-A-Family program that's broken down by district. This year, we did a family per PSA. There's 8 PSA's per district, so our district did 8 families. We had most of the food and all of the kids had gifts within a week or so. Now we're saving money for all of the mothers to receive auction vouchers so they can receive a free vehicle from our impound auction or they can trade it in for extra food vouchers.

The vehicle giveaway thing is fucking awesome, but it's sad we only make $2-300 from vehicles that normally sell for $10,000+.

Yeah, these things go on every year. We have several charity giveaways and secret santas here that don't even put their name on it. They just give cars away, pay off debt, pay for layaway, etc. with a smile and a request to stay anonymous.

The local police departments do toy drives, food drives, and other charity events. Portland Police have a whole division dedicated to helping needy families called The Sunshine Division. There are also auto-auctions that do the same thing you described, and that is awesome.

The mainstream media coverage of these things that have been going on for many years is the natural reciprocal to the negativity that has come out of the recent high profile cases of police violence.

For some reason, I thought you lived in Michigan.

I have friends on the Portland PD. Maybe a visit is in order...

Come visit. You still owe me a punch in the face and I still owe you a beer. I'd much prefer to skip the punching though. I dislike pain very much.
