Netflix shows have the luxury of building up story til like episode 3-6 til it gets really good, because you can keep watching unlike network television where they need to capture the audience in the first two.

I dont know how far in you need to invest but its a pretty good series overall once u get into the middle of it.

Season 2 trailer looks really good. I love me some blind monk.

Whenever Kublai is on screen it's worth, otherwise 50/50.

Kublai is easily the best thing in the show.

The guy playing him is just in a different league in terms of acting ability vs pretty much everyone on the show. That said, there are some other fun/interesting characters, especially Hundred Eyes and that chick that always wants to wrestle and Kublai's bastard son.

I was bored and had nothing to do today. So between last night and today I watched all of season 2. As a whole season two is MUCH better than season one. They are definitely attempting to make this into their version of GoT but it's nowhere even remotely close. It is still an enjoyable watch though.

Major story spoilers open at your own risk.
    Spoiler: show
I don't think so dude. They clearly took steps to show a holy crusade was being initiated against the Mongols. My guess is IF there's a third season it will be devoted to that conflict. And holy fuck at Kublai fucking smothering the little Chinese emperor dude. Not cool.

After spending two seasons calling out its name and hearing nothing in return, Netflix has decided to cancel its Marco Polo series. That comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which points out that it’s the first original Netflix series to not get a third season—something even Hemlock Grove managed to do. The show received largely negative reviews throughout its run, and its two seasons were apparently responsible for a $200 million loss at Netflix. It’s not quite a Qwikster-esque debacle, but it’s certainly easy to see why the streaming service was willing to cut Marco Polo loose.

    200 million? Jesus fucking christ.

I'm sad to see it go but I see the reasoning.

It's too bad season one was so uninspired. They really learned their lesson in season 2 and let Benedict Wong just carry the show, but by then people had already formed their opinions.

i'd be interested in seeing the metrics used by Netflix to determine how successful or disastrous original content is. Its obviously easy with stuff like House of Cards, Stranger Things, and OITNB, but they have SO much original shit that generates little to no buzz.

I think they would use a formula to figure out the cost per viewing. Compare the cost to produce against a % of the viewership.

If 10,000,000 people watched the whole thing, that's (napkin math ahead)

    (10,000,000 x ($8*% of viewer's time spent viewing Netflix)) - Cost to produce/market (I'd guess $250,000,000 total?)

I'll throw a stupid guess that 10,000,000*(8*.25), so 20,000,000 in derived revenue or however you wanna put it.

Should've gone with the concept of having Marco Polo travel to a different location each season. Being you know, a world renowned fucking traveler and all. The Mongolian shit got old and tired real quick in season two.

Marco was the weakest part of the show and making it all about him would've been an even bigger failure.

Ugh, this sucks. The series was entertaining, but definitely see why it needed to go.
