Possibly returning - Questions

Thinking about diving back in, I played on PC and got BLM and WAR up to like 52 and the very beginning of Heavensward, ended up giving up because it became clear that my PC couldn't handle mechanics of EX raids (and some HMs!) without making me look like a total scrub.

So, I'm thinking about diving in on the PS4 version when the mega bundle comes out in June, starting a new character and learning how to play with controller. I've seen a lot of XIV streamers using controller and it honestly doesn't look terrible.

Other than playing through all the MSQ of ARR again, which I know is gonna suck, how good/terrible is this plan gonna be?

If you're okay with playing through all of the MSQ (which is a lot.. a lot at this point lol), it seems like a fine enough plan. Honestly, if I were in your shoes, I'd still buy the PS4 bundle but use the same old character as before. Can use a fantasia to change the look if you wanted, but will save you quite a lot of time in catching up with the story. ARR was long as fuck and 3.0 heavensward was also super long (the subsequent updates like 3.1~3.5 aren't that bad actually), so you might actually get more burned out from doing all the old content and trying to catch up more then anything else.

But conversely if you're more interested in the story and not so much getting to endgame starting from scratch won't be the worst idea. Just kind of depends on what you want to do in-game mostly

I don't mind doing the MSQ again to remind me of story, but it's mostly to get me acquainted to playing with a controller. I was planning to buy the mega bundle next month for $60, but on looking in to it further I think I could buy ARR now for $20, have three weeks to level up and finish MSQ, then buy Stormblood for $40 which apparently includes Heavensward, so it'd essentially cost the same but I could get started this week at least.

Has anything or will anything have changed since I guess 2.0? I think the level cap was 50 and I had whm at 49 or 50, hated how grindy it was on fates and started my drag which was even grindier as a second job. Literally doing the same quest like 100 times and prob never got past 30-40.

I felt like playing whm might have been a mistake, I was never a big healer but wanted quick ques as a non tank and guaranteed raid spots quickly.

I played a ton of rdm in xi and haven't had a chance to look at other classes but I'd probably last longer as dps even if ques are slower.

I guess what I'm looking for is a faster/friendlier leveling experience for my other jobs or at least my whm if I stick with it. There was one zone where it was just 3 fates you do in a circle for hours and I can't do that again.

I think the addition of Palace of the dead is exactly what you'd be interested in. That's pretty much how people level alt jobs nowadays, using your daily roulette to supplement your xp gain.

Is there anyway to renew my account or anything for a trial or free week or month? Do I have to buy any expansions or anything or DLC? I don't know if I have anything after ARR.

Oh I see there's going to be character boosts? Can I boost a job or does it have to be a fresh character? That would be huge.

You can only buy one boost to 60 afaik. DoW or DoM only.

Bought it last night and took 7 hours to download ARR and HW. Started updates this morning before I left for work. Maybe I'll actually get to play tonight.

Playing on controller is not bad at all. Because FF started as console games, controller is quite native to FFXIV. You shouldn't have any problems adjusting, as long as you think of it as playing somewhat like a single-player FF plays. The hardest thing is to configure your hotbars, because of all the skill bloat right now, but that will be less of a problem in Stormblood (or so they claim) and anyway there are lots of ways to configure it to do what you want. Personally, I can only play on controller because I'm sux at keyboard as a gaming device ;D

You probably figured this out already, but you need to buy and play Heavensward before you can play Stormblood. The jump potions are coming for 4.0, but I don't know exactly what they entail other than skipping some missions and boosting your character. As aforementioned, palace of the dead is a good way to blitz a fresh character through levels and feel like you're actually doing something. WHM is probably the most boring vanilla job in the game (I play it tho), AST is king so you might wanna try that out if you pick up HW and the job starts at 30 too ;D Lots of good dps changes in stormblood though so those jobs should all be interesting to play as well.

I can also supply friend codes if anyone wants one.

I have one old character on Midgardsormr that I made when XIV came out that I'll probably not return to. My last character I played was on Brunhildr. I'm thinking I'm gonna create my new character on Ultros though so I can play with this chick I watch stream on Twitch, she has a pretty fun community it looks like.

I'm assuming samurai and rdm can't be boosted to 60? I am very interested in starting back up and boosting a dps class or high demand or just really fun class and then leveling whm separately.

Right, you have to level SAM/RDM 50-60 yourself.

Does it start at 50? Or do I boost it to 50? Maybe I'll just play White Mage since it's 50 play Red Mage or Sam and boost something else eventually.

It unlocks to you at lv50. Just like you get AST/MCH/DRK at 30

It's not less tedious, it's just not the same 5 FATEs over and over until you puke.

Though it should be pointed out that if you haven't done Heavensward yet, doing all of the sidequests alone should get you to 60. They really buffed the shit out of sidequest xp to let people get 1 job to 60 quickly.
