Politcal forum rule changes, asking for input.

because locking a megathread is going to do a lot more stifling a convo than just locking a specific one.

If we have rules that topics that run their course get locked it let's posters know the can still talk about the same general idea, they just have to come up with some new actual info.

I guess we shouldn't be surprised. It was in like the 2nd post after all.

Because anytime the section has been brought up in the staff section it's been followed by "I want to nuke it into orbit." So, I finally wanted to start a discussion on why they kept saying it and what they wanted from the section. As you may have noticed, I am like the only staff member now who posts in the section. No one wants to touch it with a ten foot pole. I want to correct that.

It's not like they could just leave us alone like they do spam though.

This. In fact, with the creation of spam that is exactly where these kind of topics were supposed to go. But there were many posters who found ways to push the majority out of there.

Really? There are a few suggestions I have commented on here that weren't addressed.

I can agree that something WILL be done, no matter what. The question is exactly what will be done.

A lot of these points will be addressed in the section and seen what should be altered. Nothing is set in stone yet outside of wantint to do something.

Some day a website will be made that catalogs trashy ideas the way People of Walmart catalogs trashy humans. They'll be able to pull a lot of material from this section.

I'd vote the section just be deleted and political pseudo-discussion be banned.

The whole threads devolved into "someone posts something absurd and someone else white Knights it harder than neph with a video of a cop shooting a little colored kid, Neph at least backs his stuff up.

Eh. I defend ALL bad cop behavior, and White Knight my way in to every discussion of police misconduct, even though I have posted a bunch of my own stories of misconduct and heavily critique the incident.

I'm equating the recent trend (not just in the poopdeck) of stuff posted on BG is comparable to the shit you see on Reddit and 4Chan. It seems the mods have taken it as a sign the forum is devolving in to the circle jerk most sane people attempt to avoid, but it's inevitable as social media evolves and hot topic issues give way to clickbait media and sensationalist reporting.

Of course, I'm just one guy who's opinion is generally disliked, so I may be the minority with that opinion.

Dont take this as me blaming mods, but really, when one rule gets broken, then people push boundaries further and further. After enforcing the current rules and things dont change, then look to addending rules?

Honestly, I tend to strongly agree with your opinions re: the fuzz. I am just strongly tired of arguing on the internet, but I still come here because I can usually find a few voices I agree with, and the arguments that (mostly, but not always *cough*) intelligent folks on "other sides" tend to have.

And I tend to enjoy reading the circular arguments. People can get into some really fine minutia, and there have been plenty of times where I have come here, and been persuaded toward one side of a topic I was ambivalent toward (genetic engineering food comes to mind; Kuya dropped a ton of knowledge and literature for me to read there), or had a current belief strengthened by evidence and arguments posted here-- just rarely so on the first pass. There have even been a few cases where my opinions have been reversed, and quite a few where I have found myself questioning my beliefs and opinions because the discussion was ongoing.

Of course, I haven't checked the Ferguson thread in like a month; I got bored of what went on, tired of the same few opinions, and I realized I wasn't getting anything new. So I moved on... but others kept at it, and more power to them.

I don't tend to post often here, and usually regret doing so because I'm really not interested in argument. I'm not interested in rigorous debate on the internet, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy, and find beneficial, reading the level of discourse that happens here. It's honestly one of my favorite parts of the day, backbiting and insulting and jokes and circular arguing and all.

Moderation hammers make me uneasy. The appeal of lurking on this subforum is that I get to see a relatively unfiltered discussion of issues from multiple viewpoints. I don't get that kind of balance anywhere else, and I fear adding more moderation to the mix will turn this place into just one more internet echo chamber.
