My friend asked me to go vote in his place since work wouldn't let him out in time since he knows I don't vote. I guess he also didn't know I wasn't registered to vote either.

Grimes ran a terrible campaign. Terrible. She has no one to blame but herself and her staff.

California Proposition 47 to resentence 10,000 nonviolent offenders + reduce drug possession charges from felonies to misdemeanors across the board (also provide more lenient sentences for other nonviolent crimes). huge and vital reformation of the judicial system for 1/10th of the country, hope it passes and leads the way for national reform.

    also, imminent Republican domination.

purely from an anthropological standpoint it's gonna be fascinating watching Obama and a Republican controlled Congress try to accomplish things for two years

I want to say this is my first time voting in an off-year election. I'm indifferent to Quinn staying governor in Illinois, but I don't want to see a big-business guy like Rauner get elected. Wanting to reduce the state's minimum wage is not a good way to sell yourself to people struggling to get by.

But a part of me also wants to just watch the world burn, with a "told you so" mentality when nothing really changes.

Democrats controlled both chambers of Congress from 2008 until 2010 and their legislative accomplishments were legion (stimulus, Dodd-Frank, healthcare, auto industry bailout, etcetc), regardless, you miss the point. hitherto Republicans have been solely a party of opposition, strangling any proposed bill with their House majority while any bill they manage to muster is likewise dead on arrival when it hits Reid's Senate, most often not even getting debated. once they control both chambers they will at the least be able to pass whatever legislation they wish in the House and force continued, public debate in the Senate, forcing Democratic Senators into the unwanted position of filibustering every Republican bill to death (and they historically have not been as inclined as Republicans are to do this), or, more likely, acquiescing to the less extreme proposals with mollifying amendments thereby forcing Obama to do something he has not yet had to do very often, veto the many many bills sent his way (he's vetoed 2 so far compared to Clinton's 37 or Reagan's 78).

so we have a transformed scenario where Republicans need to put forward detailed, concrete legislation and try to get enough bipartisan support to enact it while Obama, if he cannot find a way to cooperate with the moderate elements of the party, becomes the agent of opposition. a fascinating role reversal for political wonks, though as a human citizen man person i am more inclined to share your skepticism that it will break the gridlock. possibly though, Gingrich's Congress accomplished quite a bit with Clinton as did Tip O Neill's with Reagan. some of our most successful periods have come with the opposition party controlling both chambers of Congress as it forces cooperation in a way nothing else can. well, besides the Japanese attacking.

I voted by mail last week. Biggest proposition for us is legal weed. Next on the list is GMO labeling which won't pass.

There is a county funding measure that will keep a corporate tax in place to pay for schools. That one is likely not to pass with the huge shitstorm about Intel and Nike getting massive decades long tax breaks. Lots of bad feelings about faith in local government actually getting businesses to pay taxes right now.

So far, medicinal marijuana in Florida is looking like a go.

Oh nvm, I didn't realize it needed 60% of the vote to pass, it's sitting at 57%. :/

Rick Scott looks like he's going to stay in for another four glorious years. Way to go Florida.
