Looking for Dog as pet/house keeper

Long story short, my house is in a bad neighborhood (east side San Diego) and there have been multiple break-in attempts by burglars. In the last 3 months, we had had like 5 attempts total. First one we weren't prepared so ended up losing some stuff in the house and $$$. After that, we installed bolt/steel door frame on all the windows and that helped greatly. All the attempts so far by different burglar has failed...

We work all day so they have a lot of time to try and break-in, so we were thinking of having a dog to keep the house on watch while we are away (kids come back from school in the afternoon around 3ish so the dog will most likely be home alone from 9-3). We also have a camera system installed to monitor through online/phone apps.

My family decided that they wanted to get a husky. My question is where do I go to get one? How does this process work? Are there like reputable sites where you can buy husky puppies? What kinda shots do I have to get for the dog? We'd like to have the dog as soon as possible so please any help would be appreciated! Thank you.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Sounds to me that no matter what you do you are going to need to hire a professional trainer.

Aside from that, google husky rescue for your state.

Are huskies good guard dogs? I know they bark, but they don't really bite, i think.

    doesn't look like it:

    http://www.huskyhouse.org/husky/

However, Huskies are not meant to be guard dogs. In fact, a Siberian will greet a stranger at the door, with a wagging tail and perhaps a "whoo" showing excitement
Quick look shows they tend to be extremely friendly.

I mean, I suppose any dog can be trained, but this is probably not the best bet.

Personally, if I wanted a guard dog that was for a family I would go the german shepherd route.

they even look similar. can't really go wrong with shepards. i suggest you name it Wrex.

pits and pinschers are also pretty good iirc, but tbh you need good training to make a good guard dog. talent without training will only get them euthanized at the first attack or false alarm.

pits make me nervous around kids only because of dat powerful jaw lock action. But ya, no matter what gt, if you want a guard dog, don't fucking just get a dog and think you can teach it what to do. Any dog can turn agressive if not trained properly and then you either have it biting the neighbors' kids or your own.

pits are some of the sweetest, most loyal, caring dogs you'll ever find. it's the main reason they make good guard dogs. The lock is mental, and it's something all dogs share. it's why you see shit like this all the time:

they're so focused on straight in front of them they don't see the open gate. this is why you see ceasar milan divert dogs to the side when they start doing aggressive things, instead of pulling them back. it breaks their focus.

Also, their desire to please is also what makes them good fighting dogs. They just want their owner to love them, and if that means killing and getting torn up, they'll do it. for senpai.

Huskies are working dogs so if they are not given tasks or enough room they WILL get destructive. Many people assume this is the sole fault of the dog but really do serious research into the breed of dog and it's typical characteristics , behaviors and such. Huskies have been known to escape and tear shit apart if left alone for long periods of time. I definitely agree obedience training is necessary but it won't magically fix things. Also puppies require A LOT of work and attention and leaving it home alone for hours may not be the best for it or your family. While crate raining is great it still requires adequate time and patience. You may want to seek out a young adult and I highly agree with searching out rescues.

Also any reputable breeder/rescue may be asking about your home life , why you want to adopt/have a dog and might even ask to make a home visit to ensure you have the adequate accommodations for the breed. I personally would go towards a German Shepherd for a guard/loyal dog , as they are also working dogs but adapt to being very well trained in my experience. This isn't something I would rush into at all..make sure you are ready for this lifelong commitment and can devote all the time and finances and responsibility needed. I know in some areas if a dog bites someone on your property you can be held liable..keep that in mind and research that as well. I just don't recommend rushing into it as a dog won't naturally deter anyone and animals have their own personality which may or may not mesh with you or what you expect from a "guard dog". I hope you find a solution for your family you can be comfortable with.

Get a pitbull, they are absolutely amazing with kids and very protective of them. They will pretty much do anything for you and are loyal / protective almost to a fault (which is why they get a bad reputation). The only reason I don't own one is because I live in white suburbia and would have to worry about the dog getting loose and getting into trouble. If I lived in a situation like yours where I had kids and needed a dog to protect the house I would probably get two.

You need a decent sized dog that will bark at something that comes near your house. You don't need an actual dog to bite someone. You aren't training a "guard dog" without serious professional assistance. Any dog trained to attack for any reason is a MASSIVE responsibility for both the dog and owner. You need the right dog for the situation. You are not anywhere near knowledgeable enough to pick the right dog, most people aren't.

Now if you want a dog to sound like he's going to kill you, all you need to do is train him to bark when he hears anything outside. A larger dog is key. Pit Bulls are awesome with kids, as are american bulldogs, mastiffs are another good choice. Shepards will naturally go nuts when they hear anything outside. The bark from a doberman will make almost anyone who is trying to break into your house shit their pants. Chows are phenomenal guard dogs by nature, but they are known to not be as good with kids.

You need a big dog, and with a big dog you need to diligently train the animal or your life WILL be miserable. Call a well reviewed VET and talk to them about the shots the dog will need. Rabies and Distemper are typically the minimum, but it can depend on your municipality.

#1 thing to remember is make sure you can afford the animal, that includes all of the medical bills associated.

    Edit:

My friend has an American Bulldog, Pitbull/Rot Mix, and a bull Mastiff. You don't get within 50' of the house before you know not to walk any further. They aren't any threat to anything on 2 feet, they have dragged down deer before though, and a coyote. Cleaning up after that was disgusting. 2 guys below are 150 lbs approx. The mastiff is only a year old, she will top off near 175-180 though.

Having a dog is only a deterrent of crimes of opportunity, so whether it bites or not isn't an issue. A burglar isn't going to want to stick around to see if your dog will really attack, he'll just move to another house. Until you get/decide on a dog, I'd recommend leaving the TV on with a high volume setting that can be heard around the door/windows and leave lights on to make the appearance of someone being at home.
Google: Confessions of a Burglar, they give a lot of tips on how to seem less like a target for break-ins

lol something like that without the mannequins. But yea, burglars don't target homes with a chance of someone being there and they don't go to a house without knowing they'll make money. Well, the good ones at least.
