The biggest hindrance to meeting people ingame is definitely the lack of channels to meet people through. You can join some PFs, but even if you do that there are many people who aren't going to be running PFs because they have a FC they do everything with, or they just don't get out into the community very much, so you will never meet them. Another blockade is how insular the small communities can be. Even if you meet someone you want to start playing with, they won't necessarily be interested in playing with you - they already have enough people in their FC, and if you're not in their FC you may as well be dead to them.

If you want to compare it to XI, which stands as a pretty good comparison despite being played out, you ended up knowing everyone in XI because of all the reasons outlined in previous posts in this thread. 1. they couldn't change their names freely 2. no DF to let people coast, you had to get down and dirty with the community on your server and they all knew pretty quick if you sucked 3. many reasons to invite people to do random stuff, even if it was tele-taxiing or ganging up on a difficult mob or story missions or whatever, you ended up meeting a lot of people in the overworld and recognizing their names later on.

So yeah, the piss-poor networking channels in XIV combined with the VERY few reasons to network at all equals a whole lot of difficulty networking. There are regular posters on this forum even that are on my server (apparently) who I've never met. It was never like that in XI.

I'll echo the sentiment that, especially on sargatanas, most people are loyal to their groups or only groups of people in the same bracket. You can farm A3S and A4S? Good on you, good chance you're not helping anyone through A1S or A2S because you don't want to "waste your time." It's basically: "If we need a replacement, we're not training anyone, we're not helping anyone, we want only confirmed A3S and A4S farmers." or "We will sell you A3/A4." or "Looking to get through A2S!" types of groups, of course you have those stuck on A3S..but that comes down to the fact the group isn't geared for it or coordinated for it. So I agree, if you can network..good on you..but it's not the norm in XIV and never will be. It sounds easy on paper...

But that's like saying "Why don't you mingle with the rich people and attend $4200 a plate fund raisers? All you literally have to do is just get dressed, show up and pay for your plate."

As said, in XI the community mattered more - It was far easier and if you were absolutely trash, a horrible person or known to steal, you got no where. Yes anyone can level to 75/99 but you didn't get far at all in XI unless you were proven to know your shit. Events with a high skill participation always had that one or two stragglers who were behind everyone else and still cleared it because everyone else knew their shit..like go to Provenance Watcher with 16 shitty people and see how far you've gotten.

In XIV? The game is so forgiving by design that you can be shit and still get through it - which is why aside alexander savage and binding coil, (making barely even 1% of content in a 2 year old game) everything is faceroll and you have no need for community which is why when you finally DO get community efforts (Hunts) look at what happens. XI had its drama..but XIV is just a full on meltdown.

The community post are dead on. The game doesn't promote a community, its closer to the opposite. In DF they could turn off names like PvP and it wouldn't make a difference, chances of playing with that person again are close to zero. If you have a solid 8 man lunch table you have no reason to let anyone else sit with you. Yes, there are white knight players that level alts to help their friends or have enough free time to smash their face into A3/4S with randoms but that's 1% of the 1%.

I ran into Theo Legend in a DF event. We raided together for years in FFXI and I didn't even notice it until the fight was over and he had already left. WTF is that for community, I played with a friend and neither of us even cared notice. There is literally no reason to chat with anyone besides Hello.

Most people in FFXIV know me because of my FFXI account, how sad is that?

ARR's combat doesn't really facilitate being able to text chat in DF unless you want to watch your DPS go to shit, for better or worse.

    Good point.

Could they make an in game chat function? Like enter a duy and all 4-8 people have a channel? I've only played 11 and 14 but I think CoD games do something like that.

It's not uncommon that people's social circles have gradually become smaller and smaller as time has gone on. I spent a good deal of 2.4-2.5 helping my friend & his FC clear FCoB and joining PF clear parties to help out and get to know people. Almost all of those connections don't play anymore or are part of their own statics having their own static issues. Doesn't help that Coil not having much flexibility in helping people for so long made being insular the prevalent mentality and once people are set in their ways, it's a bitch to change.

Many other MMO and online games does it - They don't want to for XIV however, much like they don't want us to send tells to other people in dungeons. They can barely handle us having the stats we do server wise and since Yoshi said any increase in additional data to the servers will crash them, the infrastructure probably can't handle in-game voice chat even if it's just a client feature.

VOIP probably wouldn't crash those servers. However getting them going and online would be a bitch. Then there'd be a second part to all of it.

PS4/PS3/PC cross VOIP. PC players having mics. People not being fucking assholes.

I mean there's a reason why Destiny didn't let you chat to other people for a long time.

On another note, you don't spend hours with other people grinding away unless you're knocking out some FATE grinding. In which case its easier to speak because no one cares about DPS in FATEs.

FFXIV is about as much of an MMO as Destiny is. You get your close group of friends/static, do your weekly raid, daily dungeons (Or as destiny calls it strikes), and whatever odd thing pops up.

Crafting is worthless for anything but glamours and self repair. Gathering just feeds into crafting.

I really wish they'd just throw materia melding out the fucking window at this point.

Yeah I ran into an old Dynamis friend on Balmung. We don't even talk much. *shrugs*. I met someone from my own server in DF too(saw their comment saying they were looking for friends). I thought, why not? Turns out they weren't that serious.

I was pretty damn lucky to meet someone and get close, and they are pretty much the only reason I play now.

Can't speak for them, but it's a little tough for me to adapt to the way gamers are now socially. People in general were different back then.

Considering you excuse the state of the FFXIV endgame saying things such as "You need a static of close friends to clear content" don't you think the irony is golden here?

When did I ever say you need a static of close friends?

I said to network and have an organized group. That requires the static's leader and/or members do more then raid call and set a time for the static to run.

I'd love to see you quote where I said friendship is a requirement to raid.

Edit: I never said the current state of end game was fine for most people. I was suggesting fixes to their problems, but I have blue sky syndrome so my suggestions are completely invalid and have no reason to be considered.

People earlier had problems with shitters being catered to. I think it's the opposite because of reasons I've already stated.

I also said middle of the group players are not able to clear the content because they're not good enough. There is obviously a void of content missing for people and that appears to be what is being added with the airship content.

Its not easy to take a shit endgame experience and have positive solutions to it, regardless as to how improbable they are to many people.
