I mean, it kind of requires Diadem as all the crafting shit requires Diadem-only mats, lol

You know I was wondering did FFXI have a better plot and delivery or am I just nostalgiaing? I'm not sure if it was just because of the experience but thinking back on FFXI to FF14, FFXI was a part of my life FF14 is just a game. When something happened in FFXI I felt it and the emotion whereas in 14 its kind of like yeah that happened. I'm wondering if it's because each bit of story felt well deserved because of the time it took or if because they just presented the story better.

maybe some of both. probably more that if it was such an integrated part of your gaming life it meant more, too. playing ffxi back then meant in for a penny, in for a pound, and there was a daily commitment.

14 is a stark contrast in that where you can plow through everything right away then stop giving a crap, which makes one less sentimental about anything story related.

Nostalgia no doubt plays a huge part, but there's no shortage of actual reasons as well.

XIV has 50 million quests, most of which do nothing to actually advance the story or contribute to the world, and the few interesting bits get drowned out in the sea of fetch quests.

And there's much to be said about the "journey", ie. the content you have to clear to see the story. XI made you work for it like nothing short of coil has in XIV, and that makes the reward that much more special, unfortunately coil was probably the first and last time we're going to see any kind of story gated behind challenging content.

In XI you didn't just waltz into sky and sea, and because you had to actually overcome some adversity to get there it became that much more significant (also there was stuff to do once you got there, which is more than can be said about XIV's world).

A walk through the park is nice, but not very memorable.

Climbing a mountain can be very unpleasant, but you're gonna remember doing that shit.

That's mmo's in general now-a-days and I doubt you will ever get that feeling again even if you went back to rose-tinted XI. XI required a time commitment and level of depth a current generation of MMO's couldn't survive on. Could you even survive in Vanilla XI now-a-days?

As someone that played 11 went to 14 and went back to 11, came back again for heavensward and went back again to 11: 14 Story is ok... but whoever makes teh cutscenes in 14 fails at creating good atmosphere and climatic shit. Sorry to say this but 11 has Cutscenese that makes the majority of the 14 cutscenese look like shit (not from a graphical point of view).
Not saying the story is bad in 14, but the storytelling itself (Cutscenes, whats gated behind what kind of quests etc). its utter poopshit tbh ¬.¬

i think that's due in large part to the way they use their music. XI, they didn't over-use the generic "storyline is happening" music. it only showed up, if at all, in side-quests (of which there were very few). the main storyline always had music tailored to the situation. when you delve into the shadow lord's backstory, the slow, agonizing portion of the memoro de la st^ono (or however it was spelled) played because his backstory is fucking tragic. deep, deep betrayal. which, actually, brings me to another difference: XI was a much darker game. there were straight up murders (on the level of "Long live the king." from Lion King). of good guys. people doing horrible shit to each other. shit, the game opens with the rape and pillage of an entire duchy. at a personal level: you follow two children through the devastation and watch as one is lost, presumably to be raped/killed. XIV everything is washed over with happy endings or slapstick or abstraction.

    Hey, XIV has deaths.

Remember when they killed Nanamo and the Scions?

fuck, if there's one thing that pissed me off the most about HW it was the fact that Nanamo lived. The scions I found acceptable at least.

The only lasting 2.55 storyline change was Raubahn's arm. That's a fucking crime, you didn't even get a slap on the hand. I mean, no one expected the Scions to be dead, though.

The xiv subreddit and official forums are in full shitstorm mode with people saying that 3.15 is the patch that made them quit. I'm curious as to whether Yoshi-P will address any of the criticism lately. The last couple live letters have been nothing but manufactured PR and not really a community thing. I mean when is the last time Yoshi actually fielded questions?

I hope that it makes enough noise to have him comment on it, or possibly do another player survey to change the direction they are taking things. Endgame is mightly unheathly right now, but XI went through the same lean periods at times. Meanwhile i'm going grind the rest of my jobs to 60 because I was too lazy to do it at heavensward's launch.

I think people are going to be extremely disappointed when almost no houses disappear anyway since they threw in a free login weekend >_>

Yeah, I've been playing some FF11 during the huge lulls in XIV and no doubt, it has much better storyboarding and cutscene direction (along with some actual camera work, something FF14 has been lacking in even though it got better with Heavensward) that hold up really well even today.

Let me find my surprised face, it's around here somewhere...

I don't get that bitchfest about 3.15. Everyone knew way ahead that this was going to be an endless grind to cheaply add 100+ hours of play time to keep people busy until 3.2.

It's nothing new, SquareSoft abused the skinner box concept since 1987. I guess people thought that all the shitty gameplay mechanics would suddenly disappear the moment they "fired" Tanaka or maybe people should start lowering their expectations.
