Paid retainers were a trial to see what they could get away with, and the answer was "holy shit wow, we don't even have to try".

I was thinking enough complaint threads on the OF, or enough dropped subs that they feel adding an extra free retainer or more inventory slots might help get people to come back. I'm sure it'll happen, just a matter of when.

Orrrr they could revamp the retarded glamour system and that would more or less fix inventory space for all but the most obsessive crafters.

Retainers are legal RMT. 10k an hour per retainer means you always have plenty of gil. I've never had inventory issues but have the full spread of 8 retainers.

edit: Actually I guess with the GC Credit farm alts wouldn't be good. Still I only use my extra two for storage. I feel like 8 would just be bothersome. I'd rather sell ore.

But XI wasn't selling retainers to people who are happy to spend extra money on top of their sub fee every month and god does this game make me angry and disappointed. You are definitely misunderstanding the situation for FFXI. Either that or intentionally mischaracterizing it. They were saying it was impossible to expand the player inventory past 80 slots... which they still haven't actually done even today.
They basically ended up finding a workaround which was to give the player various other things to carry with them like the mog sack and so on (none of which go past 80 slots). What they were saying is impossible seems to actually have been impossible since they still haven't done it. You still can't go past 80 slots in any of the sacks and satchels and cases and whatever.

The inventory cap per bag was 60 until wotg thou, I'm pretty sure SE was saying more inventory was impossible way before that era.

Closest thing that FFXI came to what FFXIV is doing is when they offered expanded inventory you could only get by buying a security token.

Yeah since it could be session hijacked. I didn't mind it in XI cuz shit, the token was nice to have. They also did indeed say it was impossible to increase the inventory past 60 and add any more Mog House space (they added a 2nd full level recently for those who stopped keeping up with it) so, finding work arounds was SE's specialty with a game designed in the late 90s.

So the fact they seemingly can't do shit with a modern MMO on a modern MMO engine branch, it's far beyond any kind of "limitations" and the fact they know they don't have to do anything and can make money. I tried to tell people on OF before I got banned to stfu about wanting to BUY fantasias with money and extra retainers because "yoshi deserves it" because it'll just lead to a road where they will see what they can get away with.

I don't mind a cash shop since I play plenty of F2P and B2P MMOs, but....it's plenty obvious something is off once you cut through the PR crap.

I wonder if they're just falling into the same "merges = death" superstition that so many other devs and players believe. Housing would be tricky but I don't think it would be too tough to just double the number of wards and sub divisions.

I mean obviously charging people for it means less people will do it which absolves whatever hypothetical server load. However, I think it's obvious they kind of oversell it, they could charge less too, it's not like it's a separate transaction or anything so they have no excuse about the transaction fee blowing it out of the water. At least give me a discount for 6 months of retainer, something!

Come on that's a bit of an over simplification right? If every person on a given server all had two extra retainers, or there was enough people buying more than two retainers to make the number of bought retainers totally equal to the number of normal retainers then this logic would fly. However I think probably the number of people buying extra retainers is a lot lower than you think. I agree that the servers can probably handle the load, but I think your logic is pretty faulty. Making some players cause an additional impact on the server is not the same as making every player (over 17) cause the same additional impact.
