I mean ultimately the thing to keep in mind, is that YoshiP is not a FFXI guy, nor was he ever, and he was never trying to make a FFXI sequel. He was salvaging a game that was a disaster into what we have now.
And honestly? As much as I know people here love their FFXI, YoshiP saw a tremendous amount of success with his model of vertical progression and emphasis on instances and tiers and stuff. He was incredibly successful at what he was doing, so there's probably not a real reason to look back at FFXI's success because him directing FFXIV has produced greater critical and financial acclaim.
He probably looks at FFXI to see what kind of artistic things would be cool, or what kind of nostalgia trips he could appeal to, but he's not interested in making that game. And with MMOs... you can't afford to appeal to niche, you have to appeal to a huge audience and keep a variety of players happy, which they've probably done a good job of so far, but there's still plenty to criticize.
