Well you could ask a tigers fan how important a closer is.

    2016 - Griffey, Piazza, Bagwell
    2017 - Raines, Hoffman
    2018 - Chipper, Thome
    2019 - Rivera, Halladay
2020 - Jeter, Schilling, possibly Ichiro

Pudge may eventually make it but he has too much PED suspicion to be a lock. One of Schilling or Mussina I think will make it, I'm guessing Schilling. There may be a darkhorse from the upcoming eligibles that could sneak in (love to see Moyer sneak in), but I'm pretty sure anyone below Schilling from the current crop won't make it any time soon.

I guess I should have said which is more valuable, 200 innings or 60 innings. Closers are magnified a lot but unless they're Mo Rivera they don't help a team win as much as a solid SP

I agree. I just couldn't resist taking another stab at the tigers. I still can't even figure out how they made the playoffs with that bullpen.

I think the fact he was dominant as a closer before going back to being dominant as a starter again counts for something.

Jaso is good. Sad to see him go. He was on fire till his season got derailed by a concussion.

Apparently Max Scherzer "very close" to signing a 7 year deal with the Nationals. Their rotation gonna be stellar this season before next seasons mass exodus of free agents.

Dunno why they would. Don't think they need any bats other than a left-handed 1B/OF type to spell Werth and Zimmerman (or start for Zimm when he inevitably gets hurt)

He was pretty mediocre in the first half and then was more Stras-like after. Maybe they think his value is at its peak?

That rotation though. Mad Max, Stras, JZimm, Gio, Fister. Goodbye NL East.

Werth old and fragile, Yunel Escobar lined up to be their starting 2B. they need bullpen help too after losing Clippard

He's making $7.4 million this year and probably at least $12-13 million next year. He's also a Boras client and WILL test FA and ask for at least 10 years since he will only be 28. He's also had a couple major arm injuries and has complained of stiffness and pain in his arm and shoulder the last 2 seasons. He runs high pitch counts frequently and rarely ever gets past the 7th inning (in fact his career IP/start is below 6, his career best was a hair under 6.1), but does have very good strikeout numbers.

I can see why the Nats would want to trade him as his name alone will probably cause someone to overpay, and the fact that he is a ticking time bomb who's next injury will likely destroy his career. I don't think they'd get enough value back for Zim or Fister, since guys with 1 year of control left don't seem to be a very valuable commodity these days, but Stras should get a fairly nice package.

The NL East is going to be ass this year, and probably the next few after that. The Phillies and Braves are in rebuilding mode, the Mets are the Mets and will fuck up somehow (trade the farm for an oft injured Tulo), and Loria will blow up the Marlins the instant they start getting a little expensive like he always does. Looking at the Nats they have damn near their entire team coming up on FA and huge raises, with an already large payroll and decent but not great farm, so there is a good chance they will start to suck soon too.
