The problem i have with it is that it doesn't really do a good job of assessing risk. It's just a blanket ban. A pair of gay men who have not had sex with anyone but each other in the last ~6 months and are tested hiv negative are no higher risk than a straight couple. People who have had multiple partners, or been with someone who has had multiple partners are of course higher risk, and should not be allowed to donate.

The problem is you are asking a person for information they cannot have with certainty (has your partner had sex with anyone other than you in the past 6 months/since their last HIV- test result) and I can see why they wouldn't want to ask that question.

Don't know why this seems to be such a high profile thing. They should spend more energy developing synthetic blood, 100% disease free from the factoree.

Not sure what you mean, but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_disaster. Since the blood donation ban was for Europe up until 1996, I thought that might have been what it referred to, since it's the only Europe-wide event at that time I could think of. But apparently it was for mad cow disease and not that. Which, in my opinion, is even more stupid, since most European countries weren't even hit that hard by it. Hell, Sweden only had 1 case of Mad Cow disease, and 0 cases of vCJD.

He's talking about the weird spelling, literally no one in America has ever seen it spelled "Tjernobyl."

They already have. They're working on lifespan and saturation now.

Oh, makes sense I suppose. That's how we spell it in Sweden.

Чернобыль (Chernobyl) in Russian, so it must be a dialectical thing.

So with the Supreme Court set to look at the cases tomorrow, I had some questions. It's possible for the court to remand the 6th circuit cases right? And then deny the ID/LA cases which would add ID to the list of states that allow marriage and force LA to the circuit level? Or do the 6th circuit cases need to be heard before they can be remanded?

Or do people think the court will actually make a ruling now that we're at 36/50 states? (instead of the incremental state by state approach they've taken so far)

After considering a total of twelve same-sex marriage cases three different times this session, moments ago the U.S. Supreme Court announced it will accept a same-sex marriage case for review, in fact, all four cases from the 6th Circuit.

with 36 states legalizing the practice and given the judicially conservative nature of Roberts's court it feels like a fait accompli at this point

Kennedy is going to cause Scalia to have a stroke as he pens the last line of the dissension. Thomas dies two days later of stress induced cardiomyopathy. Gays marry, we replace two awful judges. Everyone wins.

I read the whole thread this morning and I was going to post something in regards to the blood donation content, but I have a feeling it's gone too long.
    Should I just not bother?

Trust me. Nobody here is happy with Brownback. We're stuck with him thanks to Western Kansas.

Dude says we have a $400 million deficit, so he cuts like $15 million from education.

Yep, Walker is THAT bad. Take a budget deficit, use it to gut teacher unions, promise job growth that fails to materialize, causing another big deficit, use that to gut the UW-system (while trying to put together 250M+ for a new arena for the Milwaukee Bucks)
