I disagree entirely, QP has a very limited learning scale outside of how to aim a little and use your abilities. People don't coordinate and just do random things. Positioning in particular is hard to learn when your entire team is scattered to the winds. Also, the overall skill level in QP is generally considerably lower than comp. I can play QP and generally carry on my main heroes and even on DPS roles sometimes (which I don't play.) Even the worst comp games are better than shitty QP.
While a lot of these posts sound mega triggered, you have to learn when to stop playing if you're triggered as shit. Comp is *really* luck based and even more-so depending what role you play; if you know Stylosa on youtube, his highest account is 4200 but he has another account that can't seem to get past 3550. It's the same guy playing the same heroes, but it's just the sheer randomness of comp that keeps him that low. My friend has a general rule that if he loses 2-3 in a row depending on how bad they were (trolls/throws), he stops playing for the night or at least a few hours.
Hell, when I play on my friend's mid plat account to practice dps since I'll get shredded as a dps on my own account, I don't even join voice chat... mostly because I usually start off playing Hanzo and you know how everyone feels about Hanzo.
For all you support/tank players who feel stuck, I feel for you, I've been there. Last season I had dropped to just over 2k at one point and I knew I was better than that (I was mid diamond the season before and now I'm mid master this season.) Before I hit 2k, I was playing the role I thought best for the team comp (which usually was Rein) and it just wasn't working out so then I decided to just play D. Va only even if it meant no Rein because I enjoyed playing her the most (and she's probably my best hero.) I find healers are very hit and miss at lower levels and Rein is obviously very dependent on heals. I don't really include dps that are stuck because I honestly believe if a dps is stuck, they're either SUPER unlucky or just not as good as they think they are. There should be games you can just take over as a dps player; hell, even as D. Va from 2k-3.3k, there were games that I could simply dominate. That doesn't happen anymore because I'm about where I should be.
If some of you support or tank players want some help climbing, I don't mind playing some on my friend's mid plat account with you. Just hit me up; my account is Okiru#11474 and I'll swap to my friend's when we play together.
Having a very limited learning scale isn't mutually exclusive to do what i said though, which is being able to learn quite a bit from QP. Yeah sure if you spend 100% of your time in comp you will always be in far more structured environment to learn such things and it'll come faster too, and overall you'll learn more. For some people that's probably far and away the best option. But that doesn't mean you can't still learn some of the same and vital things from QP: for example, understanding who has what ults and when and when they're gonna use em and how to react. That particular thing is probably the most important skill in the game, and personally i learned it mostly from qp. Sometimes overwatch is still overwatch even if one mode is more rigid than the other.
While it's true that not every QP game is going to be competitive or close or something you can find value in, if you look close enough there's always something to work on. It's just often hard to see or figure out what you're looking at when you have people goofing off half the time. For me personally, when i do QP my games are usually a mixture of diamond/master/GM's, and some of the time they're goofing off, while other times they're playing the best they can, just not on their main heroes. But no matter what kind of game i get i always find something to work on, as i'm constantly looking to refine not just mechanics but how i think about that game and how i impact that game through my actions and hero switches, because to me feedback is feedback, even if it's not in comp. FWIW much of what i learned came through mostly non-comp mediums, which included watching vods, reading comp/OU reddit, discussing things with other players, then applying it in qp at my own pace, instead of having to do it during the stress of comp. and now when i do play comp i'm usually doing things i'd already gotten hours of reps with in qp.
Anyway i'm not trying to be like the anti-comp guy or anything. But learning how to be a better player can come in many forms. And learning the game and playing it doesn't have to be a miserable experience where sometimes that's all comp just breeds. Just trying to say that discounting QP because it's "QP" and there's very little to glean from it would be the wrong way to look at it.
I'm pretty mediocre at best all over and only being slightly less terrible on roadhog and dva. And now with roadhog's flanking skills being significantly nerfed I'm getting the "learn to become a flex pick or lose" option shoved at me. Would be fine except I have a meh pc/gpu so I'm playing at 60 fps and /at best/ I have 110 ping so I feel I'm getting fucked out no matter what. To boot ever since the exp weekend my ISP has somehow ruined my ping to now shoot up to 600 during matches so I get to play the slide-show rubberband game that triggers me nonstop. I'm extremely hard to get salty but it only takes one match where ping ruins the match (constantly now) to give me rabies.
Fuck rural internets.
As the best Overwatch player on BG i recommend playing only against the AI
I honestly don't get how people play Overwatch at a high level without exclusively rolling with people they know. I'd rather not play half the time than play with the no-brain selfish randys in comp. I strongly recommend just finding / making a team on a site like Guilded or wherever and then send invites to every competent player you come across, so whenever you want to play you'll have a pool of people that don't suck available.
Quick Play is only good for getting a feel for things, though. It doesn't take advantage of anything that makes Overwatch actually great. Competitive is rage-inducing because it turns up the stakes and puts all the weight of victory on good teamwork, but that's also what makes it special. I think if you're playing Overwatch not on comp, you're not playing the game correctly. And if you're playing comp and not getting way too passionate about it, you're probably not being a very effective teammate.
Eh I wouldn't really consider Plat high. It feels more like the average. And yeah groups would be nice but without a LFG finder/rank limiting who you can work with it feels like a moot point. All I know is I'm sure in the hell not going to ask for help on the OF. That place is worse than the FFXIV OF I think.
I guess I'm a shit teammate since I roll with the punches and most of the time don't call people out. Play my role well and adjust to the shitstorm.
Speaking of, I need to stop being lazy and hit diamond still.
I feel really bad cuz my friend and i have a 70+% win rate this season duoing together, then we invite corr in a game, and we lose.
I've also heard good things about the Your overwatch discord, people always match up, and scrim there.
scrims probably are the best and fastest way to improve without the shittiness of comp toxicity
I can handle triple tanks better with reaper, but i can do it with pharah, but we also need double healers if i go pharah. It's not bad luck, we did have a bad 2nd healer. It's just that if i single dps, i would prefer having 2 heals (zen/mercy), 2 tanks (winston or orisa/dva, mei, and me as pharah or reaper. A combination of reaper+zen+mei is a menace to triple tanks, added bonus if they run single healer. 2nd healer wasn't being good on voice comms either, observation+calls make a massive difference (calling tracer no recall, hog no hook, calling anti healed targets purple, calling out of position targets)
Well, Platinum is actually quite high if you look at the distribution. (This is old but still pretty accurate im sure, we'll see, its for S3)
Bronze - 6%
Silver - 22%
Gold - 34%
Platinum - 23%
Diamond - 10%
Master - 3%
Grandmaster - <1%
Meaning Platinum players rank the top 14~37% players. if I didnt fuck up the math a little there
should work better post patch. he should be a lot stronger against dive too since he can sustain and win way more 1v1's, and protect backlines.
Reaper usually needed a bit of backup to even be a tank buster, otherwise he's just the type of guy to hide around a corner waiting to pop whatever shows up.
Reaper and Lucio and/or Zarya can be super scary, but most Reapers like to play on the enemy side of the map rather than with other people.
And that's the issue I really wish they'd fix. I don't want Reaper to have the same mobility as Tracer/Genji, but it'd be nice if Shadowstep didn't leave you so vulnerable and have him scream "Here I am (rock you like a hurricane)!" when you use it. Being able to cancel out of wraith would be nice to to give it a more tactical element instead of being a sign you're nearly dead and are trying to run for healing.
Sometimes people in Comp need to relax. I get yelled at for not playing Mercy (was Ana) and this guy gets all angry. Go against same guy in the following game, calls me a cunt. Tell my team why the guy is angry at me. Report the guy for abuse in chat with the entry "Called me a cunt" Team trys really hard to shut that guy down. Win and I thank my team.
Chill people. You are supposed to climb with a 51-52% win rate. You have stupid high expectations if you think you're going to win every single game or have a 60%+ Win Rate. Comp is setting up matches that have relatively equal skill after all. Lose a close match, it's a-ok.
