the thing about internet forums is that no one needs to be here. walking away is always an option. especially since the nature of the game(s) has changed. back in XI, you HAD to have some community resource if you wanted to be at all decent at whatever you were doing. It was vital. BG became that resource for a lot of people, and spam thrived because people who needed to be here for XI also came in here to shoot the shit. And then the game collapsed, the community became small enough, SE open enough, that such resources were no longer needed. And spam died, because no one needed to be here anymore. Everyone who was interested in spam as its own thing either moved on or continues to linger, waiting for someone to do something interesting. Because spam is not welcoming. Nor should it be, that would defeat the purpose of spam. but a community that is not welcoming will not grow, and if it's not growing, it is slowly shedding members, because no one does the same shit their entire life.

all of these things apply to poopdeck, as well. it exists in an environment where there are few avenues for community growth. Not many members make their way into poopdeck, and fewer still ever actually post. we are constantly shedding people who actively post in poopdeck, too. I ban a few. Far more simply stop posting. "so what" you say. So who are you going to talk to without them? It would simply become an endless circlejerk, a constant chucklefest of the in-crowd. And we already have that. It's spam.

removing people is not usually something i like to do, precisely because our inflow is so small. i'm not sure it's high enough to even compensate for natural loss, let alone imposed losses like bans. but if i don't ban them, it drops to zero. no one's going to risk embarrassment for a condescending profanity-laced un-apologetically-racist response. So they see that kind of shit go unchecked, and instead of posting, they walk away.

So I check it. People are stupid, not blind. And Church was not exactly subtle.

And therein lies the reason he was banned. It was a running joke when he had his sock. Most people knew it was him, but it was let go. Then Ksan decided to unban him. So Church went back and immediately started doing the same shit that got him banned in the first place. Except this time he didn't get anywhere near the response he used to. I like Church a lot. He's always been cool with me. Seeing some of the try hard posts he had after the ban was rescinded, was fucking painful. There were multiple discussions regarding whether to keep him or ban him. Had he even attempted a tiny bit to be less, well..him, he'd still be here I'd wager.
