Synopsis

Well it's not without precedent where Star Wars is concerned. I think Lucas got 100% of the ticket price for the initial weeks of the prequel releases as well as pretty high cuts (75% +) of the box office for the various special edition runs.

The new wrinkle here is the requirement that the theatres run the movie on their largest screens for a minimum of 4 weeks or pay a penalty. I think the real intent of that is to give some teeth to Disney staking out release dates on the calendar should they extend the practice to their other major releases and convince the other studios to give their big tent poles a wide berth by relegating them to the non-prime screens if they don't.

You are correct about the prequel. Phantom Menace was 100% box office returns for the first 1-2 weeks and then it gradually fell so that the theater started getting a cut. This is why movie theaters are in the concession business which is where they make their money. Not entirely surprised at the stipulation for keeping it on their biggest screen for one month. Definitely a tactic to keep other from releasing at the same time.

To be fair, the stuff like "Kessel Run" running gear is marketing 101. So easy and a no brainer. Can't fault Disney for wanting easy money.

Though it is a little cringeworthy, and no different than say "Frozen" themed ice cube trays.
