Darth Maul wasnt that good though. A collective story (even if its bad) is still better than a character with unknown motivations and a spear saber.

Hard disagree. Dual saber > bad story!

I'm disappointed Rey didn't make a dual saber, seeing as her preferred weapon was a staff, I thought that was the route they might take.

TPM is just a bunch of set-up world-building for the rest of the prequels (and the OT), but the TPM itself doesn't ever cohere into an actual narrative story.

Case in point: who is the protagonist of TPM? In the original trilogy it's quite clear the protagonist is Luke. Anakin is the best analogue for the prequels, but we don't see Anakin til halfway into TPM

Agreed, the fight accompanied by the Dual of the Fates made that set of scenes epic

All true statements. Doesn't change the fact that the fight was forced, meaningless and had zero impact on the overall story (the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vadar).

Actually, I'd argue that the fight had a huge impact on the overall story. Had they not fought, or if Qui-Gon had lived, then Qui-Gon would have been alive to take Anakin as his Padawon, and not Obi-Won. Obi-Won was not ready to accept a Padawon at such an early age. Qui-Gon would have trained him differently, and his future path as Darth Vader may have been avoided.

This lol. I'd watch RotJ 3 times before watching those 3 movies over again.

Buddy says there's a theory he read that its Rey training with Kylo is why the fighter isn't shooting at her.

I didn't think that they made a very big deal out of Obi-wan's youth and inexperience as a reason for Anakin straying to the Dark Side. Arguably the blame just lies on Qui-Gon for setting Obi-Wan on the path by insisting that Anakin be trained despite Yoda's misgivings.

While Lucas' execution was poor and rife with awkward directing and/or bad performances, the movies do a pretty good job of establishing that what made Anakin's fall to the darkside inevitable was that Anakin as a person was inherently vulnerable to its temptation. Yes part of it was his age when he was trained, but it's also something inherent in his character. Combine his 1) being raised as a child of prophecy whose abilities are always heralded but is never given any recognition (all the way from his childhood as a slave in TPM to being denied a seat on the council even with the rank of Master in RotS) and 2) an overly simplistic view of the nature of problems in the world and a lack of respect for process (see discussion with Padme regarding tyranny in AotC) with 3) his reaction to emotional loss being rage-fueled lash-out, Palpatine's temptation of the dark side as a way to save Padme was overwhelming.

Of course Anakin of all people would believe that something was being kept from him and that he was special enough to master the power to overcome death and that galaxy would be better off for his rule.

Seems pretty obvious to me. If he is legit trying to kill her and doesn't want to fire shots, that is just dumb.

1 and 3 were definitely better. For me 2 was the worst of the bunch.
