This movie was an amazing ride. My thoughts:

    1. The first 35-45 minutes were literally an entire 2nd mini movie that they had no way around, cuz of Rian Johnson's blunders. It was cut-after-cut-after-cut which is a huge no-no in movie making, but whatever. I know why they did it and glad they got through it quickly. An added 20-25 minutes to the movie to let it breathe early would have been nice.

    2. It so obviously retconned TLJ. And one of Luke's direct lines you could tell was Mark Hamill's idea entirely. That smirk....was a beast. The entire trilogy, including this movie, would have been much better if several plot points in this movie were introduced within the first hour of TLJ. TLJ fans will hate this, and I love it.

    3. This movie felt like Star Wars. It had some moments that took your breathe away or made you choke up. Not just one, but several. I left the theater with energy.

    4. A handful of Rey's final lines of dialogue were absolute perfection.

    5. The humor hit well and wasn't forced garbage like in TLJ. Wasn't much of it and it came from the right places (C-3P0 etc).

    6. The newly introduced characters were actually a hit, which was a huge step up from TLJ. I love Babu Frick (sp?) and Zori. Most of the other chick's story was cut in post production.

Bravo JJ. That was about as well as it could go in 2.5 hours given the circumstances. Like The Force Awakens, I'll be seeing this many times in theater.

    Spoiler: show
How is the humor not forced when Ben does a little hand wave smirk after force teleporting the lightsaber?

The movie is fine, turn your brain off and remember they want to make money level of fine. All nostalgia, dumbass narrative and that's saying something from the series that brought us Jar Jar Binks.

Mesa perfectly fine wit dis muvi annie. It no pushing boundaries or nutin, but itsa fine.

It's just so fucking odd that you buy this property for BILLIONS, and you go to make a new trilogy, but you plan out 3 completely different movies doing completely different things. It's just so weird.

That’s a failure on Kathleen Kennedy as the head of Lucasfilm and, further, on Disney for allowing her to do it.

Certainly a dumb move, and Kennedy is to blame ultimately. JJ should have just been told he had to do all 3, or none. If the following were introduced in the 2nd film, this movie would have been even better (along with the 2nd movie not being a pile of shit):

    1. Knights of Ren. Even if it is Kylo sending them off on a mission to the Unknown Regions.

    2. Emperor (or whoever you want the main villain to be, Plagueis etc) somehow revealed toward the end, maybe via Knights of Ren perspective. Sometime after Snoke is gone.

    3. A better hint at her lineage
    Spoiler: show
Lightning from her hands in part 2, instead of in 3 AFTER we have been reintroduced to Palpatine

Plenty more to list, but just those 3 adjustments would have been enough alone.

I blame everyone who bitched about the Last Jedi. They spent half this movie fixing/changing things from that.

Last Jedi was still the best one in this trilogy.

Having different directors is fine, but Rian Johnson was seemingly given complete creative freedom, and that was probably a mistake. Personally, I look forward to seeing movies where he can do his own thing without affecting the work of others. It's possible to like TLJ and also think that making Star Wars improv might not be a great idea for a trilogy.

I think overall The Last Jedi was really how the trilogy should have gone - in a different direction... but the subversion of expectation was stupid. Too stupid. There were also plot points that really didn't need to be there (like the casino and code breaker). Everything with Ben, Luke, and Rey? Fantastic.

I know a very simple metric: my theater stood and applauded at the end. In TLJ, it was a few claps and mostly moaning/groaning.

Hopefully they go to Revan / Knights of the Old Republic next. I think they would also work wonderfully as a high-budget Disney + show.

Funny, my theater half ass clapped for this one.

TLJ had multiple scenes with loud cheering and full on clapping at the end.

Moral of the story: Your theaters wack yo.

You could tell in this one, they very much knew which characters were high on the audience acceptance meter. 95% of the scenes either had Rey or Kylo. They made sure if Finn was involved that Rey would be close by.

    Are we using spoilers?

Hardly needed more. John Williams' score spoke for him. It might have been John's best work, going out on top.

I know but it's kind of funny in retrospect.

    The scene worked fine enough.

Wow, it just hit me that...

    Spoiler: show
TLJ was retconned so hard that the movie didn't even attempt to address the broken Kyber crystal. Shit was just magically fixed and not even mentioned, unless I completely missed it. Was her workbench, where the books were kept, supposed to insinuate that is where she fixed it prior to the movie? lol

I mean, did they need to? There was more than enough time between the movies to get it repaired.

The new video game had magic kaber crystals too. They pulled the exact thing with just force healing the crystal. We got no rules in this universe anymore.

I'm just sad that we didn't get anything even close to how awesome Rey + Kylo vs the Praetorian Guards was.
