But the thing to note, is if you were at AMC early, did anyone get the segments for The Magicians season 2 and Emerald City?
I'm a bit shocked about Emerald City, low expectations considering the network axed it's order one season, then ordered it again, and now it's got 10 episodes all directed by Tarsem Singh and it looks like a long-form run of those old RHI/Hallmark mini-series from the 90s. (Merlin, 10th Kingdom, The Monkey King, Dinotopia.)

Did not expect to hear this about this movie. TFA's been beaten to death with this critique but Rogue One? I don't see it.

I feel the same. I liked TFA a lot more. But while I've seen every movie several times I'm not really all that into the SW lore.

Good but not great IMO. Not sure what I can add to what's already been said, although I want to re-emphasize how useless the Stormtroopers' armor is. Maybe I missed if it was charged with energy or something but a dude with a stick shouldn't be able to knock those guys out in one hit.

As a side note, I'm in Taiwan atm and the theater was half empty on opening weekend. Anecdotal obviously, but I'm not sure their whole "let's get the chineses to watch it" gambit is working too well (superhero movies gets asses in seat almost every time though). Guess we'll have more representative numbers in a few days.

Haven't been reading thread, but my impressions from last night:

Movie is pretty good, but not great. The first 2/3rds were great.

I started to get a little disgruntled once things moved to the final planet and I realized everyone was going to die.

Gripe #1: Everyone dies. Dafuq.
Gripe #2: It doesn't mesh as well as I'm sure they think it does with A New Hope. Leia is a member of the imperial senate. She is a senator, full stop. She's PART of the Empire. Her role in the Rebellion is one of subterfuge and feeding information. It's stupid to have her on a ready-corvette (which was not deployed in battle...?) in the middle of a battle. Second, in the opening scenes of ANH, Leia's ship is operating under the pretense that it's on a diplomatic mission. Pretty hard to pretend they were doing that when Vader literally fucking saw them run away. I mean, I guess they could try anyway, but it just strikes me as stupid. They tried waaaaay too fucking hard to link back to the OT, and bungled it in the process.

Gripe #4: The movie wasn't about people after they went to the data storage planet. What made the OT so great was that it was about Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, the Droids, and Lando as they got over their own personal shit to become leaders in the Rebellion and brought it to victory. What made the Prequel Trilogy so annoying was that it was about Anakin becoming a whiny bitch and killing all his friends in a fit of teenage angst. Once they get Rogue One assembled, the movie becomes about hope. Yay? I wanted to see the characters go on to become badasses or something. Instead of character development, we got a CG Leia saying "Hope." This is why, I think, the movie left me thinking "That was fun but I didn't really like it."
Gripe #5: EVERYONE DIES WHAT THE FUCK. Like, okay, I get sacrifice and whatnot. That's cool. But here's the thing: Rogue Squadron was this badass squadron of people too weird and problematic for the normal Rebel squadrons. They made themselves a home fighting for a cause that was uncomfortable with their help. It became this prestigious squadron of mavericks who got shit done even at great cost. We kinda got that, for a while. And then everyone dies and now it's over. Fuck that. Sure, lots of the characters SHOULD have died. But we needed at least one left alive for the squadron. Nope. Fuck off nerd, that shit's not canon anymore. Ugh.

Overall.... eh. It was fun, but not great.

Another nitpick. It was really annoying when they had Red 5. It's like, "HERE'S LUKE'S CALLSIGN GUYS!!! RED 5 HELP ME. RED 5 I CAN'T SHAKE THEM! RED 5 ARRRRG!!!!!"

Whole lotta salt in this thread all of a sudden lol. I didn't see the cameos coming, but everything in the last 30min of the film was so obvious from the moment you read the synopsis of the movie. Getting there was enjoyable, but I don't think I was ever going to be satisfied with any ending they did.

I don't think it's too much of a logical leap that the Rebellion would rename one of their squadrons Rogue Squadron shortly after the Battle of Yavin to honor their sacrifice.

I'm not sure why you are so surprised that everyone died. I thought most people were expecting that scenario. If a member of the team somehow survived, it would seem odd that they'd be absent for the Battle of Yavin which happened, it seems, just a few days afterwards. I'm fine with how they died. Some of them got somewhat heroic deaths...some of them just got randomly blasted. That's war.

I went in thinking people would survive. Then, they showed the shield and how it worked, and I was like....WELP! Then, after they took out the shield, I thought we'd get survivors. Even after all but the last 2 were alive, I thought they'd try to get to a ship, but they just went to a beach and were like....WELP!

I loved that plain clothe people survive blasters but not "armored" people but I think that's an issue for the entire series not just this. And yes, armor was fucking useless and the troopers were bar none the worst of any group.

Not sure how you can say the troopers were the worst when the Stormtroopers in this movie alone probably killed more people than the other movies combined. I mean, they actually hit people they were shooting at in this one.
