i wonder how tough that material is. it looks so thin.... well ok, thin compared to what we have. i imagine it's tough, but i'd still be scared of coming close to anything sharp or pointy in space, seeing as how i personally seem to cut myself on the most random of things, like protruding metal bits, bad welding, nails, corners, flat and rounded surfaces (don't ask me how, because i don't even know how.) id imagine spacewalks are full of dangers due to all the random crap striking the ship all the time and leaving dents/holes.

...you do know what happens to a pressurized vessel traveling through a vacuum that gets a hole in it, right?

Painstaking care is taken to avoid collision with objects down to millimeter size. The debris field is mapped and I can promise you with a certainty greater than the fact that Trump will tweet something stupid in the next 24 hours that nobody is doing a spacewalk anywhere near that region. They would die.

it's been tested for space exposure and vacuum pressure but i believe it is a capsule suit designed to be worn inside spacecraft in case of a how do they say rapid decompression event. it is not their hitherto unseen EVA suit which will presumably be bulkier and more protected.

what does "already tested to double vacuum pressure" mean?

or more specifically, what's a double vacuum?

Outside is 0, inside is 1. Suit still works when inside is 2.

Yes, it's a pressure suit for sitting inside the capsule. It's not meant for space walks. Picture the stuff the Apollo astronauts wore as they walked out to the launch vehicle, not what the Shuttle astronauts flew around while repairing satellites.

In an hour and a half, SpaceX is launching a Taiwanese satellite and landing on the drone ship.

That was really fast - 11:30 from launch to landing/successful satellite deployment.

Is it good for the government to push for private sector innovation if one firm does it so well that they are crushing every other company in the industry?

I mean, privatization isn't 100% evil. I'm just wondering whether opening the door for competing contracts is good when it comes to space travel.

If I recall history correctly, it wouldn't really be much different than how NASA was working anyway.

There are plenty of other companies who work on spacecraft and spaceflight, just not really the manned projects. Partially because it's a pretty big waste of money at this point in our civilization, partly because we don't need that much competition on something that the world isn't ready for.

But there are enumerable spacecraft up there that SpaceX had nothing to do with and work fine. SpaceX is just like...the Apple of aerospace engineering. Giving you a lot of shit you don't need in a beautiful package that makes you want it.

Have I mentioned how stupid manned missions to Mars are in the past month? I feel I'm overdue.

SpaceX is by far the cost leader worldwide in their core competency - satellite launches.

    That makes them the anti-Apple.
