What does going back to the Moon do for us again? I'd rather see some incremental steps towards permanent moon bases/stations than just landing on the moon because Space Races. Although, I don't think we have the economic efficiency of moving heavy parts into lunar orbit for stations/bases yet until something like the BFR is tested. Reclamation of parts is going to be critical for these.

Well to be fair, I think the only company thats actually interested in going to Mars is SpaceX. Boeing just wants to sell the rocket and technology to the government to get there.

More testing, more experiments can be conducted, more analysis of costs associated with the trip.

Bottom line with this Trump space stuff.
1. No changes before FY 2019 budget.
2. Two years left in first term at that point.
3. Little/no Moon specific funds spent by 2021.
4. Unless Trump re-elected next POTUS could easily switch back to Mars, asteroid or wherever.

Mining rights for helium. Once America runs out of clean coal and oil to spill on native americans we're going to need other fuel sources. The moon is like he middle east without having to bomb any brown people which is why we aren't really in that much of a rush about it.

A space elevator would drastically cut costs and basically force a monopoly on space travel to whatever country/corporation builds it. (Think t4 crafting shields vs everyone else stuck without any shields)
It's all a massive amount of investment but whatever group gets things done first has an extreme advantage.

^This. I've been saying this for a while. Building a base on the moon gives us the ability to practice and learn about how to deal with hospitable enviornments over the long term and also how to deal with emergencies. Also, if something bad happens and the crew needs to return to Earth due to some screw up, a rescue mission could launch and be on the moon in 3 days, whereas on Mars, they have to wait for a favorable Earth-Mars alignment which can take up to 26 months to occur, not to mention the duration of getting to Mars for the rescue itself.
