What the fuck is that
Space is terrifying
Tell me you don't see the judgmental space baby being cradled in that orange mess
SpaceX Dragon 2 Docking Simulator
This is harder than I thought. I'm channeling all of my Kerbal Space Program prowess into this.
Shit, this is going to cost me most of my day isn't it?
Fuck it, clicking link!
Could be worse, it could be Burrito Bison 4.
No sweat first try

I tried on my phone twice and kept failing. Switched to desktop and succeeded first try. Thank you KSP.
All the PhDs and post-docs submitting fellowship proposals expecting JWST data return in 2-3 years have been getting dumped on. It’s kinda sad.
I have another hubble proposal in this year. JWST can eat dicks.
Edit: If JWST doesn’t launch by the NASA decadal decision for the next great observatory mission(s) it is gonna throw a gigantic wrench in the works. Origins is like the leading candidate because people are sucker for optical and it is supposed to take over after JWST’s “limited” lifespan and we’ve all gotten good science data from it. I would truly love it if Origins gets fucked though so please break as much shit as you can.
Lynx all the way baby.
Edit2: On the off chance that anyone who knows about this stuff still posts here...
Yes Lynx. Athena can suck a dick. It is XMM+1 and I dont want 20 years of 1980s spatial resolution. Been working with some XMM data the past 2 weeks with a high proper motion object and am getting absolutely DICKED by both source confusion in the observation and XMM’s shitty data processing pipeline, which Athena will use likely.
Lynx is like Chandra +5 and will use the vastly superior CIAO data processing pipeline.
Very cool, had not heard about Lynx before but reading up on the Wiki page and it's pretty fascinating.
You operate out of the collegiate side of things Sath or you on a base somewhere? What I know of JWST is all based on the ground system side of things since that's what I work. (Systems+Security engineering for the MOCs/BMOCs)
I heard there was a crazy backlog to all proposals for JWST, I got brought on a little after the 'great purge' where they nuked pretty much all the upper and middle management for dragging things so far behind schedule due to a lot of bullshit. (At least on my side in terms of operating systems, security specs and what not)
Chandra science operations operates out of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. I work on the observation planning and scheduling team so I'm there at the CfA. The engineering operations teams operate out of a secure private building about 30 min away.
There is a gigantic backlog. They've done at least 1 real and 1 test call for proposals. Maybe 2 real at this point. It is a shitshow. And it is really, truly a problem for grad students / post-docs who don't have tenure and were assured 3-4 years ago when they started their programs that they would be able to get the JWST data they need to finish/publish their work. It's less of an issue for older faculty / people who can get usable data from Hubble. Those depending on the increased performance from JWST are fukt. Kinda sad. Astronomy is one of the more bloated "physics" fields, much more so than like theoretical astrophysics, so it is really cut throat and "publish or perish" is a very, very real thing.
Even if these people are able to finish their dissertations by creating models of what they expected to get from JWST, which is probably what will happen, it is going to prevent them from ever getting fellowships or prestigious grants. The work just will not be competitive enough.
Damn that sucks, hate to see that shit. I know a few missions i've been part of also had issues with dragging their feet due to budget/bureaucracy/just terrible management where they had all their PhD members cutting loose to go to other missions or even different agencies in general.
So this is basically the new general science thread, and we have been discussing Chandra and Hubble (and science that can be done without JWST) I figured I'd chum the waters for some of you with some work I've been doing that you may find generally cool.
We see UV, X-ray, optical, and other wavelength emission from planets in our solar system and exoplanets alike. These are caused by interactions between the solar winds of their host stars and their atmospheres, and we can use this information to discern what the atmospheres are like. In the case of something like Mars (or our Moon) we see just reflections off the surface for higher energy emissions. It's pretty cool.
But in our local neighborhood there is some wonkiness with X-ray and UV emission from some of our planets. Jupiter specifically, Saturn likely. Jupiter produces X-ray and UV emission independent of the activity of solar activity. This means that the planet is producing at least some of it's own X-ray and UV emission. There have been longstanding theories about why this happens, but they are pretty bad and don't explain a lot of the physics. I've been working with some friends on identifying the source of this emission (I am not lead author by any stretch, just a co-author on these more recent works) and we have some great results. We have a Nature paper in review and an article in Science magazine submitted last night for review. The Science article loops in a lot of researchers from the radio observation side of the field and the Juno spacecraft team. So now that it is submitted, I wanted to drop the abstract.
If it gets accepted (fingers crossed) I'll be sure to post the full article here. If it gets rejected I will also post the full manuscript here lol.Since 1979, Jupiter has been observed to produce bursts of radio, UV and X-ray emissions
with mysterious quasi-periodic regularity - pulsing on timescales of minutes. How and
why Jupiter produced these clockwork-like pulsations remained unknown. We combine
simultaneous observations by the Juno spacecraft with the X-ray and UV observatories:
XMM-Newton, Chandra and the Hubble Space Telescope. These reveal that the radio, UV
and X-ray pulses are all synchronised, beating in time together. This multi-waveband
synchronicity provides key constraints on the processes generating the emissions. By
comparing the emissions with in-situ magnetic field measurements, we find that they
pulse in time with fluctuations of Jupiter’s magnetic field, called Ultra Low Frequency
(ULF) waves. These ULF waves modulate plasma waves and particle flows to produce
Jupiter’s quasi-periodic pulsations.
The tl;dr of the paper is that there are a lot of factors, but one of the cooler results is conclusive evidence that the volcanic ejecta from Io (moon of Jupiter) escapes the gravity of the moon and gets gravitationally bound to the Jupiter-Io system. It gets superheated into a plasma and then ends up interacting with Jupiter's magnetosphere. This means that the volcanoes on one of Jupiter's moons causes Jupiter to produce independent X-ray and UV emission. We've had evidence for this for a while now, but our multi-wavelength campaign linking it all together is very cool.
Hubble's UV camera has been critically important in these studies, up-to and including current observations. A few friends and I have a proposal in to use Chandra in a newly "discovered" way such that we can use one of the more sensitive X-ray imaging instruments as an Extreme UV camera to pair with simultaneous observations with Hubble's near UV camera.
There's still a ton of interesting stuff waiting to be discovered in our own solar system. It's very cool.
Edit: And yes my primary field is still binary black hole merger simulations. This is just something I work on for fun because I find it really interesting.
Wrong, its jovian gas form alien emissions!![]()
OMFG PARALLEL UNIVERSE FOUND!!
https://nypost.com/2020/05/19/nasa-f...ckward-report/
j/k really lol, looks to be lcickbait reporting but found it interesting to at least glance at.n a scenario straight out of “The Twilight Zone,” a group of NASA scientists working on an experiment in Antarctica have detected evidence of a parallel universe — where the rules of physics are the opposite of our own, according to a report.
The concept of a parallel universe has been around since the early 1960s, mostly in the minds of fans of sci-fi TV shows and comics, but now a cosmic ray detection experiment has found particles that could be from a parallel realm that also was born in the Big Bang, the Daily Star reported.
God that is just the worst form of clickbait. Some of the clickbait-y shit in there is just quotes from ANOTHER clickbait-y source. I fucking hate science reporting.

tl;dr: The fundamental issue of the calibration of the instrument still hasn't been resolved with respect to whether or not this could've been a glitch. These new limits, in conjunction with the inconsistency of
isotropic flux interpretations, leave no room for an astrophysical interpretation of the AAE in the context of the Standard
Model for time windows as short as 103
s. However, it has
been shown that these events can be explained using physics
beyond the Standard Model, as many models suggest that
the AAE lend support for axionic dark matter, sterile neutrinos, supersymmetry, or heavy dark matter (Cherry & Shoemaker 2019; ... )
Many of these models, excluding the axionic dark matter
explanation (Esteban et al. 2019) or those heavy dark matter scenarios that are tuned to prevent signatures in IceCube
(Hooper et al. 2019), can be constrained by this nonobservation at IceCube. Dedicated tests to quantify these constraints
are beyond the scope of this work and may be the focus of
a future study. In addition to explanations that point to new
physics, it has recently been suggested that the AAE could
be explained by downgoing CR-induced EAS that reflected
off of subsurface features in the Antarctic ice (Shoemaker
et al. 2019). Another possible explanation could be coherent transition radiation from the geomagnetically induced air
shower current, which could mimic an upgoing air shower
(de Vries & Prohira 2019; Motloch et al. 2017). Explaining
these anomalous events with systematic effects or confirming
the need for new physics requires a deeper understanding of
ANITA’s detection volume. Efforts such as the HiCal radio
frequency pulser, which has flown alongside ANITA in the
last two flights (Prohira et al. 2018), are already underway to
try to characterize the various properties of the Antarctic ice
surface.
This has the potential to be a cool result that may change the standard model a bit and give us more information about our understanding of dark energy. The one thing I am absolutely sure it is not is a detection of a neutrino from a parallel universe where time is running backwards to us. There are physically realistic results that are way cooler than that anyway idk why people need to go so fucking batshit insane right off the jump. This leading to constraints about our understanding of dark energy would be really fucking cool.
Fuck science reporting.
Edit: To extend on "fuck science reporting"...I went through 3 articles, including tracing back sources in the article linked. None of them even referenced a single actual paper involved in this. Not a one. I had to google for this and then go to arxiv once I found more info about the instruments involved.
