    So awesome, glad this all went nominal so far. Hope it sparks even more renewed interest in space exploration. Found out one of my missions is going to be assisting in Lunar Gateway development the other day so excited about that.

    Lunar Gateway is going to be awesome. Easy access to trips to the moon.

    I think I held my breath that entire time. Wow! What a launch. I won't say congratulations yet SpaceX, but so far so good!

    Yup, staging point for sending missions to Mars easier and also potential for asteroid mining endeavours which would be amazing. Osiris Rex is a pretty cool mission

    @Meresgi

    Dear colleagues,

    The novel coronavirus COVID-19 has changed almost every aspect of our lives. Significant uncertainties persist with regard to how the situation will evolve over the summer and fall.

    Under those circumstances, and after consulting with the JWST Users Committee, STScI, NASA, ESA and CSA have decided to delay announcing a formal schedule for JWST Cycle 1 GO/AR proposals. We anticipate providing a further update on the schedule in mid- to late-July. For planning purposes, STScI is exploring options for a proposal deadline in the fall with the Telescope Allocation Committee meeting in early 2021. The JWST launch schedule is evaluated independently by NASA.

    Recognising the challenges faced by the community, we will give at least twelve (12) weeks notice of the revised Cycle 1 proposal deadline. The JWST Call remains open and all proposal preparation tools and documentation continue to be available.

    Quoting myself from earlier in thread cuz I don't feel like re-typing

    All the PhDs and post-docs submitting fellowship proposals expecting JWST data return in 2-3 years have been getting dumped on. It’s kinda sad.

    ...

    There is a gigantic backlog. They've done at least 1 real and 1 test call for proposals. Maybe 2 real at this point. It is a shitshow. And it is really, truly a problem for grad students / post-docs who don't have tenure and were assured 3-4 years ago when they started their programs that they would be able to get the JWST data they need to finish/publish their work. It's less of an issue for older faculty / people who can get usable data from Hubble. Those depending on the increased performance from JWST are fukt. Kinda sad. Astronomy is one of the more bloated "physics" fields, much more so than like theoretical astrophysics, so it is really cut throat and "publish or perish" is a very, very real thing.

    Even if these people are able to finish their dissertations by creating models of what they expected to get from JWST, which is probably what will happen, it is going to prevent them from ever getting fellowships or prestigious grants. The work just will not be competitive enough.
    It's gonna be similar to college athletes right now. Just gonna be a year or two of potentially really promising athletes that never make it big just because they didn't get play their senior years and the field is too competitive.

    Ooof well that fucking sucks. Yeah we don't have any clear plan for getting back to base (Although i'm teleworking full time anyways) but Goddard Base is still mandatory telework for everyone besides FoT and sometimes SAs who need to be on site. Rest of us are just enjoying Teams meetings!.

    A few weeks ago my quantum computing professor from grad school died. PhD adviser to 2 of my very best friends. Foremost expert in the world (not joking) in pretty much every single area of quantum computing and optics. He used to play the NSA and China against each other for ridiculous amounts of funding. There was nothing they could do. It's not like you go to "the second best" when it comes to this stuff. Very funny and very weird guy. Very fucking weird.

    I fondly remember one time when a "friend" of mine from when I was like 20, who is just some well-meaning but largely dumb normal human being commented something stupid on a facebook post I made about how acupuncture is completely bullshit. Not letting the fact that this girl was just some nobody who didn't know any better and was being pretty benign, John writes a fucking NOVEL in response to her on my post just absolutely demolishing her entire life and sense of self worth. When I asked him why, his response was "I don't remember doing that, I must've been drunk."

    Anyway, to the point, SMBC has dedicated a comic to him and you should all read it.

    Sucks to hear, I've poked at quantum physics and computing and yeah I laughed when I bought an "intro" book and it was so heavy in math I was like "Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!!!" Comic alerted me to his book which i'm totally gonna buy now and poke around in.
