It was the second stage, so the part of the rocket carrying the payload after the booster went back to earth. I honestly thought SpaceX was leaving that stage in the space junkyard, did not know they were purposely deorbiting them.

Saw yesterday that NASA sent a little something extra to Mars. Ingenuity, the little helicopter that's going to try and fly next week, has a special package on board. There's a little postage stamp sized piece of cloth from the Wright Brother's famous plane on the helicopter, ready to make it's second first flight, but this time on another planet.

Shoot, I was looking forward to this today..

Based on data from the Ingenuity Mars helicopter that arrived late Friday night, NASA has chosen to reschedule the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter’s first experimental flight to no earlier than April 14.

During a high-speed spin test of the rotors on Friday, the command sequence controlling the test ended early due to a “watchdog” timer expiration. This occurred as it was trying to transition the flight computer from ‘Pre-Flight’ to ‘Flight’ mode. The helicopter is safe and healthy and communicated its full telemetry set to Earth.

There is no telling when we will see it fly now. <sigh>

While the development of the new software change is straightforward, the process of validating it and completing its uplink to Ingenuity will take some time. A detailed timeline for rescheduling the high-speed spin-up test and first flight is still in process. The process of updating Ingenuity’s flight control software will follow established processes for validation with careful and deliberate steps to move the new software through the rover to the base station and then to the helicopter.

SpaceX has won it's bid with NASA to build spacecraft for the Artemis program which will bring America back to the moon.

NASA’s Artemis program is plotting the next manned mission to the moon. The documents suggest it chose SpaceX partly because the company put a bid on their reusable Starship spacecraft that has a lot of room for cargo.

The original timeline set by former President Trump, who launched the program, was to get the U.S. back on the moon by 2024, but the Biden administration is reviewing that timeline.
