I've ran into this before when trying to build my own telescope where I didn't grind the glass enough and when I did a Foucoult test my focal length was way off. I wanted an 8 inch F/6 but end up with an 8 inch F/24.
Yeah exactly, there are quite a few failsafes engineered into it but who fucking knows. Can't remember the mission, but we had a landing on an asteroid after 15yrs or so, and all but the final failsafe didn't work lol. Though this obviously won't be travelling in space for 15+yrs before unfolding so that lowers the chances of any issues occurring between launch and unfolding. My biggest concern is it making it to space, once it's up there i'm pretty confident it will unfold properly.....knock on wood.

I'm honestly more worried about deployment. Literally hundreds of mechanical steps, all of which have to work perfectly with no chance to fix/repair. Gonna be a tense couple of weeks while we wait to see if everything goes as planned.

Christmas wasn't ruined, nice work to ESA/NASA and a prefect launch on the Ariane rocket.

Unfortunately we will not have any live feed of the unfolding, so we will have to hear it from the crew.

I think at the end of January and then about 5 months of calibrations and testing before It starts doing cool shit.

They aren't anywhere near each other and the satellites trajectory has been knowledge for years lol.

I can't remember how to embed a tweet on my phone but Webb has started to unfold it's heat shield.

You can click on this link and keep track of Webb, and what it's doing, and as of yesterday its current temperatures.

    Where is Webb?

They have little clips of the current process as well. Pretty neat.

The next few days are going to be the most critical from everything I’ve read concerning the sunshield and the entire mission.

The sunshield has been fully deployed with no known issues.

Super excited to see that today. It's fun watching the temps start to drop afterwards too.

After the last few years of following politics closely and seeing the worst scum of the Earth say the absolute worst shit everyday I've been reading more science news and watching science docs. Hearing about the James Webb project is fascinating and makes me more hopeful. It's reassuring to know there are still people out there motivated and excited about learning completely new knowledge about the world not motivated by cynical money and power.
