Phew, I thought it was just me. Can't wait to see them build and test fire the full production, 100m model. This one is a a baby by comparison.

Wait we can seriously just launch stuff into space with sheer momentum?

Definitely probable on lower gravity, non-atmosphere planets/moons. But I'm not holding my breath that this will revolutionize the space industry on Earth.

Not yet, they're still doing suborbital testing. Can it spin up to the speeds they need, how does the launch/test vehicle handle the forces, how do test payloads handle it as well. The real banana, at 100m across, will spit things out at almost 5000mph and then when high enough (~200,000ft) the "vehicle" will fire its booster and go orbital. Fucking 10,000g acceleration, crazy shit.

I wonder what the maxQ will be on that sucker when it hits a brick wall of 1atm air as soon as it breaks vacuum.

NASA isn't even trying to get people to Mars anymore

Hell yeah this shit is kinda cool!

At work at the moment so too lazy to find it, but Kurzgesagt had a dope video about this kind of technology being used exactly for this purpose. Parking them on planets/moons to extract their resources and chucking them back to a collection point that can be retrieved by Earth.

This prototype only throws the payload like 6 miles high, but it's a proof of concept for making it bigger.

there was a physics video created at some point about how the whole project is a load of pseudoscience bunk. I will see if I can find it. The company is super controversial in that regard. A lot of people don't think it will scale up properly.

Even if it's a system that throws 5-10 miles and then rockets take it the rest of the way, that's escaping a ton of dense atmosphere, it's less than 25% as dense 10 miles above sea level.

the first thing i thought watching the video, knowing nothing of science, was “how would a human ever survive launch”

im sure it could be useful for other things of course but that was my first thought

Yeah I am not saying I personally think it is bunk. If it works then awesome. All I know is that I have seen a lot of detractors already for the technology. That being said most of it was before they did their most recent test so things could have changed a lot. I think if they can make it work the tech is really cool.

Main question is can the boosters survive the spinning and initial launch lol.

Yeah it sounds extremely dangerous to put rocket fuel in any sort of container under those extreme stresses

Gonna have to be a solid fuel booster integrated into the launch bullet. No way a liquid fueled booster survives those forces.
