Saw this yesterday, also noticed they said "Accidental launch" which I found odd, not sure how they accidentally launched the damn thing lol but wondering if that's part cover-up so save embarrassment or something.

It was supposed to be a static test fire which happens all the time, and the frame holding it down broke off. It's not some cover up, just a good ole fashioned fuck up

China's Chang'e-6 lunar probe just brought back samples from the far side of the Moon. I was hoping it would burn up on re-entry or somehow miss the Earth entirely and be lost in space forever, because that would have been so fucking funny. But alas.

Falcon 9 is grounded until the FAA signs off on the SpaceX investigation into the failure.

50 days into a one week trip, sounds like they are making progress.

They were able to make the seals flex at their ground-bound test facility which makes them think they understand the root cause of the helium leaks for the thrusters. Also they know now not to try to land manually because manual control stresses the thrusters more.

    Happy 25th Chandra!

NASA is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its Chandra X-ray Observatory launch by sharing never-before-seen photos of the largest known spiral galaxy in the universe.

The Chandra X-ray observatory was launched on July 23, 1999. Since then, it has scoured the universe to look for X-ray emissions from exploded stars, clusters of galaxies and more, according to NASA. The observatory returns data to the Chandra X-ray Center at Harvard University's Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.

Since its launch, the observatory has captured images of the aftermath of exploded stars, photographed the supermassive black hole that exists at the center of the Milky Way, and helped scientists learn more about dark matter, dark energy and black holes.

"For a quarter century, Chandra has made discovery after amazing discovery," said Pat Slane, director of the Chandra X-ray Center, in a news release shared by NASA. "Astronomers have used Chandra to investigate mysteries that we didn't even know about when we were building the telescope — including exoplanets and dark energy."

A planned week long trip to the ISS getting turned into 8 month stay has got to really suck.

Big oof energy if the Starliner's maiden flight turns into an unscrewed return trip where it crashes. That's a "shut down the progr and fire everyone" kind of outcome. Good thing NASA split that contract, even if Elon is an asshat.

Getting to stay in space longer is a win in my book. Imo that would be like going to a tropical island but only on business. Then they announce all fights have been shut down and I get to stay there for months on the company's dime.

They probably got them scrubbing the toilets and shit tbh. You already know the other astronauts aren't giving up the fun jobs to the homeless astronauts.

Space isn't exactly a vacation, to say nothing of how the whole thing fucked up whatever plans they would have had for the now 8 or so months they're stuck up there.
