Again I hope at one of the future launches.. let's say when SpaceX sends the super heavy to the Moon unmanned as a test.. Trump holds a big watch party at Mar a lago with Musk, MAGA Repubs, and a bunch of billionaires.. the rocket quickly goes off course and lands on the mansion. No survivors.

Please excuse me because I really don't know, but I genuinely ask-- is SpaceX really worth having around and funding?

They have dramatically lowered the cost of sending satellites and astronauts to low earth orbit, the reusable rocket technology is genuinely revolutionary.

Not convinced that the Starship is ever going to work though.

I think it is a good thing.

Given that Elon is mostly a cheerleader of it instead of actively involved, it's worth keeping around.

Definitely showed that space travel can be done cheaper and faster.

The short answer to this is yes. Elon? Probably not.

Totally, they fill a purpose and a role that is needed. Elon himself is a prick and shouldn't be allowed within 50 miles of their facilities or able to talk to any of the employees though.

SpaceX though is not a replacement for places like Goddard and JPL who run science and deep space missions like current administration seems to think.

Surely NASA having the same resources would fulfill the same purpose?

No, NASA is focused on the science portion and there are certain things a for profit company like SpaceX can exceed at that would take focus from the science at NASA. SpaceX itself is fine and fits a need, they strove for a reusable rocket and now are able to resupply the ISS and are vetted for being able to transport astronauts up there, because it's profitable for them and NASA could keep focusing on other things (though the SLS is way too over budget for what they are trying to do)

That said, our budget is getting the axe hard. We cut internships across the board at a lot of sites this summer...we're not sending anyone to conferences in person and only a few remotely. ESA conference has no NASA folks there I believe from what I read, and only 1 or 2 attending virtually because they were giving a presentation. NASA never has a single person at Defcon/Blackhat and the Space Village as a whole at DefCon has taken a huge downturn in the past 2yrs.

Having a conscious-less mass we might not even be able to see with visible light come less than a light year from us would likely be catastrophic for everything we got going on here. Just unimaginable horror as the planets orbit gets all fucked up. NO TY

    More cosmic horror.

    https://www.space.com/astronomy/blac...-trillion-suns

    For scale:

Our Galaxy is estimated to have between 100-400 billion stars. Even if you go with the higher number it would take the power of 25 Milky Way galaxies to equal the magnitude of this one event.
