I'm assuming this means the character will be playable, not announced, at this event.
So, I haven't played much at all. My stick is kinda broken, won't jump sometimes, and SFV wasn't enough of a draw to replace it. I wanted to try doing the Urien thing, see for myself.
I played about twelve matches. I lost 2. I spent a total of like a handful of minutes in training mode.
Ranked silver, beat a gold ranked Ken who absolutely knew what he was doing, was skilled. Just bopped him like he was a kindergartner. I must've given up a shit ton of potential damage because I had no clue what I was doing. The buttons are too good, reflector is too good. The more I played, the better I got with just hitting people in neutral (and never capitalizing on it). I know that's not enough to be like "oh urien is OP, i beat like some random super silver / gold online" but... yeah, OP as fuck.
The UI thing is totally a thing. I wanted to apologize to that good player, but I couldn't even find a way.
And yes those numbers include digital sales
"Sales" is loosely used too. Someone mentioned around 500,000 are just sitting on store shelves.
Well, it doesn't matter in terms of what profits Capcom has seen (ignoring DLC purchases). Regardless of whether the game just sits on a shelf or is actually purchases, Capcom has already seen the profit from it.
b-b-but guys!
dat 5k EVO entrants doe!
So I guess now the only valid use of sales statistics is to compare SF4 to SF5, and that's it?
Because we would come up with some very interesting conclusions if we started comparing the sales of either of those games to SF2 or SF3.
Just to put SF2 console sales in perspective with the amazing SF4 sales cited above:
WW was #4 in total SNES sales, HF was #7. Those were the only third-party games in top 10. Combined, WW+HF would be the best-selling standalone (non-pack-in) "game" for the SNES.
SCE was #6 in total Genesis sales (#3 in third-party sales behind Aladdin and MK2).
SF4 is not in the top 50 of 360 sales and didn't even move a million units on PS3. Combine all versions of 360 PLUS PS3 sales numbers from above and you would get the 8th-best selling game on 360. I repeat: the sales of all the PS3 and 360 copies of SF4 would rank lower in 360 sales than Special Champion Edition did in Genesis sales.
If you are trying to convince everyone that SF4 is great and SF5 is bad, stop talking about sales.
Man, I'm not trying to start any kind of debate, I just copy pastaed that shit from r/kappa.
The main point there was how the game has only sold 100k copies from Mar to Dec, which is fucking pitiful for as much as Capcom/Sony were trying to push it with the protour.

I don't think it includes the Christmas sales. I believe those numbers are up to but not including December, the most important part of December anyway. I'm curious how well the season passes and DLC packs are doing for them honestly.
I forgot you need to log in to see that far back:
Spoiler: show

I had a good chuckle @ those tags.
If you look at SFIV sales, you could make the case that after Vanilla, it failed to maintain the initial hype of it's launch as well since it just did progressively worse with every iteration. That of course ignores that fact that competitively, it did better with each coming year despite selling less than the previous version. Comparing sales to each other directly is kinda dumb anyway since it's not like sales happen in a vacuum. At the end of the day, I doubt SFV is gonna get that many more sales, it has a very bad rep that even got joked about in episode 5 of Akiba's Strip.
In other news, Topanga League is starting up again next week on the 10th. This time it will be streamed on Openrec as opposed to NicoNico.
Chun-Li 3
Akuma 2
Ken 2
Dictator 2
Urien 2
Necalli, Ryu, Cammy, Rashid, Zangief, Nash, Dhalsim, Alex, Karin, R.Mika
Not a knock against Krandor who's just the messenger. Just curious what number are we allowed to use in this thread to justify the success/failure of SFV?
It was only a page ago some of you were trivializing the sales of SF2 lol.
Don't need to go any further then Capcom's sales projections. They expected 2 million in the first 6 weeks, and giving a best case scenario of the Christmas sales are still 300-400k short of that almost a year later.
I can't help but continue to be amazed at the complete confidence with which you declare that SF5 is unambiguously worthless trash while SF4 is indisputably awesome.
Until the mid-2000s, the last revision of SF3 was called "Strike Three" by almost every high-level SF2 player I know. Many of these same players had a similar opinion of SF4; particularly, every part of gameplay associated with FADC->Ultra (which is basically the defining mechanic of the game).
A fan of the previous version of SF saying that the new version, while competitively popular, is actually garbage and emphasizes skills that are not worth measuring is just about the universal constant of Street Fighter. That's why I've tried to avoid focusing on my own opinion of the quality of these games (cliff notes: any fighting game that doesn't have the number 2 in its title is almost certainly not worth playing) and just comparing them on another basis; sales, playerbase, tournament entrants, what have you.
I actually enjoy and like playing SFV. More then SFIV :/
Holy fuck, at this point, you're simply that fucking idiot that exists in EVERY one of these discussion.
That one guy that swears whatever came out first will always be the best ever.
I can't believe I actually wasted my time destroying your shitty arguments in the previous pages.
You're THAT guy who thinks everything back in black and white was better.
You're THAT guy who thinks Jack Dempsey would beat Ali.
You're THAT guy who thinks Gone with the Wind is better than Shawshank Redemption.
The "back in my day" nigga.
Do you know WHY SF5 is a commercial and critical failure? It's because it went back to being as basic and simple as SF2, lmao.
It hurts your you very soul to know this, but imma have to let you have it.
THAT'S why SF5 is boring as fuck and sold like dickcheese.
On your momma's life, I guarantee you run a world wide SF2 competition today, and it'll get 11 stream viewers.
It's clear as day you don't actually compete in SF at a high level, nor do you know fuck all about history of the scene besides "muh SF2 sales, dawg!".
