yeah i'm skeptical of reading into the timing as some kind of eleven-dimensional chess move. they've got a schedule of one season per calendar year and are sticking with it pretty reliably. this was coming Q1 2018 irrespective of anything else in anyone else's pipeline.

Current Street Fighter V players will also receive all of this new content for free via an in-game update when Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition releases. In North America and Europe, the new version will be available physically and digitally on PlayStation 4 and as a digital download on Windows PC for $39.99 MSRP. In Extra Battle Mode, a new series of time exclusive challenges will be available for players to use their Fight Money for the chance to receive an exclusive premium outfit each month. Complete all four challenges each month and receive a special premium costume exclusive to this mode.     Current players of Street Fighter V and future owners of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition will be placed into the same player pool, with PS4 and PC cross-platform play continuing to unite fans into a unified player base.     The wording from the above press release is bad about the Season 1 & 2 characters being included. Current SFV owners gets everything BUT the characters for free. A second press release explains this;

    • New Modes and Features: In addition to the main game, the following content will be included in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition: and will be available as a free update to existing Street Fighter V players beginning on January 16:
      • Arcade Mode – choose from six different paths themed after classic Street Fighter games.
      • Gallery – unlock hundreds of illustrations as you play through Arcade Mode.
      • Extra Battle – complete timed challenges to obtain exclusive costumes throughout 2018.
      • New V-Triggers – each character will have two V-Triggers, adding even more depth to the combat system.
      • New Visuals – the user interface is being redesigned with new color schemes, revised menus and exciting
        pre-and-post-fight effects.
    • New Challengers: The original roster of 16 fighters is joined by 12 new challengers from Season 1 and 2, bringing the current roster count up to 28. The 12 additional characters are not available for free to current Street Fighter V players, but can be accessed using earned Fight Money or purchased in-game currency.
    • PS4 and PC Cross-Platform Play: Current players of Street Fighter V and future owners of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition will be placed into the same player pool, with PS4 and PC cross-platform play continuing to unite fans into a unified player base.
    • Stay Updated – The initial Street Fighter V purchase is still the only one that consumers need to make to ensure they always have the most up-to-date version of the title.
So it looks like people who purchase AE will get them, but OG owners will still need to earn/purchase them in game.

Hahaha nope. I was actually considering trying SFV again since I haven't bought any of the new characters but seeing as I still need to buy them I think I'll pass. I mean we all saw this coming cause Capcom are a bunch of dumb fucks but I guess they'd rather still try to milk their fan base than actually try to make them happy.

I suppose in another 2-3 years when Ultra comes out and they include all the characters in that I might consider picking it up but that's probably not gonna happen.

Considering that I don't own any of them, I wonder if I can just buy a license for it because it would be cheaper than buying the characters themselves. I'm actually hoping for good things to come from AE.

Season 3 rebranding instead of actual effort being put into the game confirmed. Disk copies of SF5: AE are just current patch SF5 with two vouchers for the DLC character season passes.

Yeah, this is a bad look. Without new characters being available on disc, we're just waiting for the PS4 servers to be turned off before those characters disappear into the ether.

I have limited experience with this, but is it even possible to include DLC in the product without classifying it as a different game? I know there are some re-release Game of the Year-type editions that have later DLC built-in, but I believe those are all classified by XBL/PSN as different games for which you can't even buy that DLC. If that's still the case, then Capcom would have to publish every update and download going forward separately for SF5 and (disc) 5AE, which would be a problem (all updates would take twice as long to QC).

This might be a necessary artifact of Capcom's choice to go with the update model instead of the new version model. And it's still perfectly fair to criticize Capcom for choosing that instead of the previous model of "buy this new disc if you want to keep playing."

I feel like if they offered the DLC characters for free to owners of the original who'd be updating, it'd be a sign of goodwill. Like "Hey, we know we fucked up with this game for two years, etc.. have an olive branch at least."

But nah, they made sure to avoid that. Not asking for handouts as if those who purchased actually deserve it, mind you, just saying.. it'd be a better look PR wise for sure. Oh well!

Still haven't bought this game. When this version eventually goes bargain bin, at that point I may pick it up (within 3 months??) but with DBZ on the way, who really even gives a fuck?

What if it sucks, tho? Like, visually, it's probably one of the best looking games out there easily. But mechanic wise, what if it's just pretty boring, standard, and generic, only combining some gameplay mechanics from one game into this one? I don't feel like enough people are asking themselves that.

Then again, I love DBZ and the fact that it's getting it's first true, quality game is amazing, but there's always a chance the netcode could be super garbage, and the gameplay could be a lil stale. Thankfully we're still a lil ways out so there's time to see even more of the reveals coming out!

I just hope the story is playable and isn't just long cutscenes like GG's is

I didn't hear anyone complaining about the gameplay during the beta period (and the info coming out since then has shown they're adding more depth to the game as well), and Arcsys on average has quality netcode.

I don't know why you would worry about either of those things.

Because it's always really hard to have things live up to the hype you expect from it I suppose, so I'm trying to temper my expectations out loud I think.

combo system looks boring as fuck, assists don't seem to matter either.

It still seems like it's missing "something" game play wise but I don't doubt ArcSys will nail it either on release or after a couple balance patches.

That doesn't matter. DBZ has too much symbolism for the haters. It is an emotional vehicle for every grievance with Capcom for the last 2 years.

The same people who "literally don't care" about MVCI's gameplay while trashing it will literally not care about DBZ's gameplay while praising it. I mean, DBZ has a homing dash that ignores projectiles and starts combos, but you will not hear a single word about terrible zoning in that game. Virtually every ASW game has terrible zoning, Namco has never made a game with competent zoning, but only Capcom gets criticized when zoning is mediocre.

i really dont think SFV doesnt have any zoneing. Its just not breaindead and needs more caution. If people want to zone in SFV only pick Sim, Menat Guile. I mean even Ryu and Chun have some zoneing, but its clearly they arent designed only for zoneing, so i am fine with that. I really dont get the problem with that ¬.¬ (yes i know jump ins give way too much advantage if you forked up a fireball or long range poke)

SFV has garbage zoning, garbage neutral, and garbage setplay. The hitboxes on pokes in the game are hella retarded. If you can't punish a mistake for 50% life, you're not competing.
