I agree, the older (actual in the beta) face was pretty nice, and had a ton more personality than the new one.

But, eh, I guess that if not all women in the game have the standard cutie face, people will protest.

Japan will protest, yes. Western games have had butterface and normalface women for years. Big eyes in gaming is a Japan thing. Cartoon models and game models are completely different, especially with many AAA games today going for ultra-realistic vibes.

Well, yes, mainly Japan, of course, but there's still people in the west that protested because Cammy was not the cookie-cutter cutie. Look, I don't want faces so realistic that they are mundane or ugly, but small deviations from that very specific look should be encouraged. I can only imagine the frustration of the designers at Capcom when their approach to Cammy's face gets cancelled into a standard one.


Also, even if pretty unrelated, Ryu's beard doesn't suit a japanese man that much. It's too thick, that's the kind of beard you'd expect on a caucasian.

Japan doesn't listen to the west unless money is speaking. The west doesn't abandon Japanese games because of such mundane and petty reasons. Japan does. There is such a small amount of potential cash lost from the West over anyone complaining about Cammy's look or any character's look that they'd never consider changing it because of those grousings. Japanese gamers are different, and Japan will always bend over backwards for them and their neet complaints.

I don't even consider any "western" players part of this conversation, honestly. They'd whine on twitter, but buy the game regardless. Japan knows this, but Japanese players do the opposite: those complaints turn into boycotts because they'd just end up playing another moe date train rape simulator in the meantime.
