The reason current Trunks sucks is by comparison to a superior character.

Future Trunks is the best developed character in the whole series, and the only guy that actually takes things seriously.

Also, Trunks and Goten should be 14 now. Which is a massive inconsistency in itself.

Toriyama in an interview a few days ago apparently claimed that this arc is going to be "very, radically different in tone" from the rest of DBS and he hopes that the younger viewers aren't put off by the darker tone and complicated themes.

Never saw the future trunks movie so this might be a stupid question as this whole thing confuses the fuck out of me.

This is gonna pick up from when future trunks goes back to his world after helping keep goku alive and destroy android during cell saga? So goku will be alive in his new timeline?

I think they explained in dragon ball z that when trunks changed the past it didn't affect the future. Basically meaning that what ever changes made created an alternate time line in which goku/Z fighters are alive with androids defeated (the current world we see). While trunks timeline he came from stood the same. When he got back he was so powerful from the hyperbolic training he defeated the androids in his time line by him self.
