Well as far as timelines go, it's a bit different now.

It's not just going to the past and creating a new timeline.

The time rings allow you to go to any existing timeline (present or future), rather than simply creating new ones via traveling to the past.


Remember Gowasu said a new timeline was recently created? When he was showing Zamasu the rings?

This is probably due to Trunks coming back to the past to warn people about Black

The timeline where Zamasu took Goku's body came first. Zamasu takes over Goku/becomes Black. Then he uses the time rings to go through the different timelines until he finds one where Beerus isn't in (Future Trunks' timeline; since Kaioshin died there). He finds himself and forms a partnership. Terrorizes Earth and Trunks goes back in time.

His appearance in the past leads to differences, thus branching into a new timeline (which is the one we're following in Super)
