Meh, I think I've seen too much science fiction to wind up effectively numbed to this premise. Mechanically, it's probably not a whole lot different than screening for diseases or potential deformities and tweaking from there. And given recent events in the world, I'm sure some would love to spin having testicles as a disease, then being black, and so on down the slope of us mere mortals blaspheming god and his master plan. Would any of these resulting children wind up being unhappy? Enter Nature vs. Nurture. Some probably would grow up not caring a bit. Others may murder their parents and do other crazy things. To do or not is still some form of gamble, but I think I'd err on the side of scientific advancement with the understanding that ANY of the kids should always have access to help via up front expense in the process if by some chance the tinkering does proverbially flip a few of the wrong switches. That alone would probably cut down greatly on the people who would partake, but at the same time, I figure all of this will get cheaper to do as time goes on and tech improves all around.

Or put another way, it's pretty much gonna happen whether we object or not. D:

Nothing is being tinkered with here. It's literally just sorting sperm by gender, and discarding the undesired ones.

I think the best thing we can do about this is just shaming the parents for it. Making it illegal seems like too much of a hassle.

edit: misunderstood the premise of the article and thought they were performing trans surgery on an infant. This is significantly less terrible, but I stand by my statement: get these people some therapy.
This is the exact same thing I thought at first too, and I was like "what the fuck why are people SUPPORTING THIS!?" Then I read the actual article and realized I wasn't losing my mind.

There's definitely a difference, but it comes down to essentially the same argument - who has more rights here, the unborn or the potential parents?

If there is nothing you want more in your life than to have a little girl, I don't see a problem with letting people get their wish. On the individual level, it has no effect on me or anyone else.

I could see there being potential issues in the broad sense if things become unbalanced (see: China), but that's something that can be addressed if/when it happens.

Why should we shame people for using science for their own personal gain? Or does that offend you? Science.

Yeah, I was thinking about that as well. If anything, choosing to have an abundance of females is better for the species than having an abundance of males.

To clarify: WHAT and HOW they are doing isn't an issue for me at all.

There's just a million warning lights on the WHY.

    List some?

There's nothing psychologically wrong with wanting a specific gender, especially when you already have 3 children of the same gender. It says nothing on how the parents treat their children either. Wanting a specific gender does not mean if you don't get it, you ignore or are negligent to the child. I think you're just reading too far into an obviously sensationalized news article.

IVF gender selection is not easy or inexpensive either, so it's not like it's something people will do "just because".

These lines make it sound like there's something psychologically wrong:

Apparently the disappointment of not having a girl was described by the mother as "mourning the death of a child you never had.” Other articles state that the mother had issues with depression and wanted a girl because she wanted a mother-daughter relationship and the father wanted to walk their daughter down the isle.

I fail to see why anyone would have an issue with this. This is the future, yo. Havent yall ever watched some science fiction

I bet my dad was so fuckin pissed when he found out I was a ginger with a crippling vision disability. He prob wishes I were aborted. This is why science is great. No one will have to suffer like my dad in the future. Gender is the first step of many

Only way Im ever havin a kid is if I can design him character creation screen style. Gotta find the right women to unlock all the diff genes Im gonna need. Chiseled chin and blue eyes sure as fuck arent comin from my ginger ass

I don't think that accepting genetic engineering to eliminate certain debilitating genetic diseases should also mean we should be pleased with cherry picking sex, skin color, or even the sexual orientation of our children. We don't have to ban everything or accept everything. There's a place for nuance in our laws.

"I want a daughter because I want to walk her down the aisle at her wedding" might be part of the unspoken feelings that goes on normally when getting pregnant, but it seems different when you straight up say "I want to have a child because I want to do XYZ things." It just feels inherently unfair to put that sort of expectation on someone you've literally never met and might not want that themselves. I'm not doing a good job of expressing in better terms why, though. I'll echo someone else saying it feels like child-as-accessory.

Edit: It's the same tier as they yaoi-fangirl image macro from years ago, where some fat chick with cat ears hoped for a gay son so they could bond over how cute her and hey boyfriend would be. It boiled down to "I hope my son is gay so I can shop at hot topic with him for fetish gear."

I can understand the desire to have what you want, but.. idk. I've thought about doing something like this, but in the end I would always feel wierd about not having natural selection take care of it. Technically the strongest sperm is supposed to win (so in theory it should produce a superiour human), but what if the manual selection of a sperm picks a dud? I wouldnt be able to trust the selection process at this current state of technology.

I would love one boy and one girl, but my luck ill be stuck with 3 boys or 3 girls. In the end I'm sure i'll be happy just to have children.

I also don't think that choosing the sex, skin colour or sexual orientation of your children should be a privilege you get for being rich.
