Ascension (Syfy Miniseries, premieres Monday)

Ascension is inspired by the real-life Project Orion that existed under the administration of President John F. Kennedy. The show sets up an alternate version of reality in which, in 1963, President Kennedy and the U.S. government, fearing the Cold War will become hot and lead to the destruction of the Earth, decided to launch a covert space mission. They sent 350 voluntary men, women and children into space on a century-long voyage aboard the USS Ascension, a massive, self-sustaining generation ship. Their mission is to colonize Proxima Centauri,assuring the survival of the human race. Nearly 50 years into the journey (i.e. in the present), as they approach the point of no return, the mysterious murder of a young woman — the first homicide since their departure — causes the ship's crew to question the true nature of their mission.

Premieres on December 15, and airs two episodes each night for three consecutive nights.

Whelp. Typical Syfy shenanigans, they air the premiere at 9pm ET on a Monday when I work 3p-12a, and don't make the show available on amazon or itunes or on syfynow. I bet i'm going to have to wait 1-30 days for it to become available digitally if it happens at all. They wonder why people pirate shit.

It's only going to be six episodes, and even then I didn't think I could trust SyFy enough to air the whole thing.

I didn't watch it but I had every expectation that they'd produce it like a show that was begging to be turned into a TV series, so that if SyFy picked it up and the audience numbers were good, they'd say "oksure we'll put it on after wrasslin'" and then maybe they'd eke out some more money.

Part of why I didn't want to watch it.

yeah... I know they like to do miniseries and expand into full ones (see BSG) but I wish they'd be more upfront so I'm not expecting resolution

I got over my hissy fit and finally watched the entirety of the mini-series. I'm actually pretty happy with it. I do have the problem of constantly comparing it to BSG even though its apples to oranges. I hope they continue it, i'm definitely hooked.
